The 3,000-meter run for women at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 2, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome . This discipline was on the program of a major international championship for the first time. So there was now a long distance in the women's competitions too . However, it took another ten years before a long distance was added to the Olympic program in 1984 with the 3,000-meter run.
The Finnish Nina Holmén became European champion . She won ahead of the Soviet world record holder Lyudmila Bragina . Bronze went to the Briton Joyce Smith .
