The men's discus throw at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 3 and 4, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .
European champion was Pentti Kahma from Finland . He won ahead of the Czechoslovak defending champion and 1972 Olympic champion Ludvík Daněk . Bronze went to the Swedish EC runner-up from 1969 , Olympic third from 1972 and co-owner of the world record Ricky Bruch .

The defending champion and Olympic champion from 1972 Ludvík Daněk became vice European champion
Wolfgang Schmidt reached eighth place - he finished second in the 1976 Olympics , then suffered severely from reprisals by the GDR regime, but continued his career after German reunification with a few other successes
