The men's 200-meter run at the 1950 European Athletics Championships was held from 25 to 27 August 1950 in the Heysel Stadium in the Belgian capital, Brussels .
British Brian Shenton became European champion . Frenchman Étienne Bally came in second . Bronze went to Jan Lammers from the Netherlands .

Notes on the world and European records:
- Jesse Owens and Mel Patton set their world records on a straight track, Owens over the actually longer 220 yards . The IAAF made until 1950 in the recognition of world records not make the difference between straight lines and those with full curve like on a 400-meter track. Up until then, Jesse Owens, with his 20.7 seconds , was the fastest sprinter at the Olympic Games in Berlin on August 5, 1936, on a track with a full curve .
- Helmut Körnig also achieved his European record on a straight track.
The existing EM record was not set at these European championships and was not improved.
Preliminary round
August 25, 1950, 5:15 p.m.
The preliminary round was carried out in six runs. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals. Here, too, as in previous European championships, there was an uneven division of the preliminary runs. Races four to six were filled with five participants each, the first and second with four runners each. In the third race, only two athletes started who only had to reach the finish in order to be in the next lap.
