Course of competition
The French world record holder Yohann Diniz , including reigning world and European champion , was not at the start here in Berlin . At the 2016 European Championships , there was no walking competition on the program because of the Olympic Games in the same year. The favorites were the Slovak Matej Tóth, world champion from 2015 and vice European champion from 2014, the Polish World Cup seventh from 2017 Rafał Augustyn, the Italian Marco De Luca and the Spaniard Jesús Ángel García - De Luca and García had the at the 2014 European Championships Positions seven and eight occupied.
The competition was not too fast in the initial phase with ten-kilometer sections of just under 46 minutes, but this classification was only valid for the absolute top walkers. Therefore, it did not take long before a smaller leadership group had formed, in which Tóth and De Luca in particular set the pace. The German Karl Junghannß and the Finn Jarkko Kinnunen were eight seconds behind at ten kilometers. Another eleven seconds back followed the Ukrainian Marjan Sakalnyzkyj. At the same pace, Tóth and De Luca set themselves apart from their competitors on the next section of the route. But the distance to their pursuers was limited to a few seconds. At twenty kilometers Tóth was then alone in front. Just four seconds behind were the Norwegian Håvard Haukenes, Augustyn, De Luca, the Finn Veli-Matti Partanen, the Hungarian Máté Helebrandt, the Irish Brendan Boyce and Junghannß. As the game progressed, Tóth gradually increased his pace and the chasing group behind him gradually fell apart. But Sakalnyzkyj moved up and significantly shortened the gap to the front runner. From further back the Belarusian Dzmitryj Dzjubin came further forward. At thirty kilometers, Tóth was 11 seconds ahead of Sakalnyzkyj and 27 seconds ahead of Djubin. Haukenes followed seven more seconds back. Augustyn and Partanen were also 36 seconds behind the leader in the competition.
In the further course Tóth had a weak phase. Sakalnyzkyj now took the lead, behind them a group of two formed with Dzjubin and Haukenes, who were 32 seconds behind at forty kilometers. Tóth was fourteen seconds behind these two. The German Carl Dohmann, who was 1:43 minutes behind Sakalnyzkyj, was now fifth. Augustyn followed 45 seconds behind. Soon afterwards Djubin shook off his companion Haukenes and was thus the only runner-up behind the sovereign Sakalnyzkyj. On the last five kilometers, Tóth caught himself again and narrowed his gap to Haukenes and Dzjubin. The Slovak first passed Haukenes and made contact with Djubin two kilometers from the finish. In the end, Marjan Sakalnyzkyj was safe European champion. Matej Tóth won the silver medal 55 seconds behind and 22 seconds ahead of Dzmitryj Dzjubin. Håvard Haukenes defended his fourth place without any problems and was almost two minutes ahead of fifth Carl Dohmann. The two Poles Rafał Augustyn and Rafał Sikora finished sixth and seven in front of the German Nathaniel Seiler.
