The clear favorite was the Croatian Sandra Perković. She was two-time world champion - 2013 / 2017 , two-time Olympic champion - 2012 / 2016 - and four-time European champion - 2010 / 2012 / 2014 / 2016 . Other medal candidates were primarily the German Nadine Müller - including third place in the World Cup in 2015 , third in the Olympic Games in 2012 and Vice European Champion in 2012 - as well as her compatriot Shanice Craft - third in the European Championship in 2014 and 2016.

Initially, the two German medal candidates led the competition. Müller had already presented 62.00 m with her first throw, Craft was second with her 59.73 m from the second round. Only in third place followed Perković, who had achieved 59.09 m on her second attempt. Meanwhile fourth was the Bulgarian Dragana Tomašević with 58.94 m from round two. Müller reached 63.00 m on lap three, which further extended their lead. In the third round, Perković increased to 59.97 m and thus passed Craft, but the third German in the final Claudine Vita also improved in round three to 61.23 m, making her second.

The first final round of the eight best throwers brought no postponements. Müller also achieved the greatest distance here with 61.99 m. In lap five Perković showed her skills and took the lead with 67.62 m. The Italian Daisy Osakue had recently increased to 59.32 m and was fifth behind Craft. With her penultimate litter, the Portuguese reached 58.91 m, which brought her seventh place behind Tomašević. In the last round there was another change in the battle for bronze. Shanice Craft reached 62.46 m, which is how they achieved this medal rank. Sandra Perković won her fifth European title in a row. Behind them, three Germans finished two to four. Sandra Müller won her second silver medal, Shanice Craft her third bronze medal at European championships. Claudine Vita was fourth ahead of Daisy Osakue and Dragana Tomašević. Liliana Cá finished seventh ahead of the Moldovan Alexandra Emilianov.
