The men's marathon at the 2002 European Athletics Championships took place on August 11, 2002 in Munich , Germany .

The Finn Janne Holmén won the race in 2:12:14 h. The Estonian Pavel Loskutov was runner-up in Europe ahead of the Spaniard Julio Rey .

As in the two previous European championships, there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. For this, the times of the three best runners per nation were added up. However, the evaluation was not part of the official medal table. The team from Spain won ahead of Italy and Israel.

Route

The race took place on a circuit that had to be run three times through the city center. The starting point was the residence . The course ran over Odeonsplatz - Giselastraße - Englischer Garten - Maximilianeum - Prinzregentenstraße - Isartor - Viktualienmarkt - Odeonsplatz and ended with the finish in the Olympic Stadium .
