The Bürkliplatz is a place in the city of Zurich on Lake Zurich . It is located on the western side of the Limmat opposite the Bellevue , to which it is connected by the Quaibrücke . The square is named after the city engineer Arnold Bürkli . As a bottleneck for public and private transport and because of its location, it is an essential transport hub in Zurich.
The town house complex is located next to Bürkliplatz . This part is right in front of the Swiss National Bank building and is planted with many trees and is free of traffic. There are always cultural events around the music pavilion. The townhouse complex is also used as a marketplace several times a week .
history
The development of the square goes back to the dismantling of the ski jumps in 1833 and the turning of the city towards the lake in the 1830s. This pushed ahead with the construction of a quay . The first Quai project was designed by the city engineer Arnold Bürkli together with the architect Conrad Ulrich. An action committee wanted to influence the design of the city's lake side and organized a project competition for the design of the quay in 1873/74, for which 27 designs were submitted.
Arnold Bürkli was the chief engineer of the Quaibau Commission between 1882 and 1887. The square in its current form was created in 1887 together with the completion of the Quai Bridge. Initially the square was called Stadthausplatz , but in 1908 it was renamed Bürkliplatz in honor of the city engineer Arnold Bürkli . The sculpture Ganymede has stood on the side facing Lake Zurich since 1952 .
