The MS Panta Rhei is the newest motor ship of the Zürichsee-Schiffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG), which has been operating on the Zürichsee since spring 2008 .
Installation
construction
The keel of the then nameless MS 700 was laid on February 3, 2006 in Linz , Austria. In June of the same year, the fuselage parts were brought to the ZSG shipyard in Zurich Wollishofen in heavy-duty trucks. The ship was then assembled by employees of the shipbuilding company ÖSWAG .
Naming
Traditionally, a name competition was held for the "MS 700". The jury agreed on “ Panta Rhei ”, a saying by the philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus, in English “Everything flows”. This unusual choice of name caused public discussion, as all ZSG ships had previously been given names from the geography of the Lake Zurich region. A special ship needs a special name, according to the ZSG.
Big waves
Only a few weeks after it went into operation in April 2007, the Panta Rhei had to be taken out of service again. The reason for this was unexpectedly high waves, which caused damage to the bank and moored boats. The breakdown was the result of a calculation error, because the hull would have been designed for a motor ship with only two and not three decks. The Panta Rhei was around 15% too heavy and heavily rear-heavy. Possible solutions were then tried out with a model and the decision was made to enlarge the bulbous bow, to attach floats to the side and to lengthen the stern by around two meters.
From May to November 2007, the Panta Rhei was on Bürkliplatz and served as a restaurant.
Leaking seams
On January 28, 2008, the Panta Rhei was re-watered. A short time later, however, leaky seams were discovered on the newly installed floats, which required repairs.
In September 2014 there was increased criticism regarding the safety of the ship.
Furnishing
Superstructures
The Panta Rhei has three decks for a maximum of 700 passengers: the main deck with restaurant and entrance area / ticket office on around 180 square meters of covered area, the upper deck (158 m²) and the sun deck (121 m²) for the first and second class, with the wheelhouse for the ship's command .
Interior
The interior was designed by the company Auer from Innsbruck, which had already designed various luxury hotels and yachts. The lighting concept comes from the Delux company.
