In this competition there were two medals for the GDR: silver and bronze. This time, too, the medals of major international championships since 1966 remained with the same three athletes, only the order among each other changed once again. The European champion was the 1968 Olympic runner-up, Nadezhda Tschischowa from the USSR. After 1966 and 1969, she won her third European Championship title here. Silver went to the third of the 1968 Olympic Games and the 1966 and 1969 European Championships, Marita Lange . The Olympic champion from 1968 and vice European champion from 1966 and 1969 Margitta Gummel took third place.
