history

The brothers Bernhard Marte and Stefan Marte completed their studies at the University of Innsbruck . Stefan Marte has been President of the Vorarlberg Architecture Institute (VAI) since 2005 . At the beginning of their careers, they mainly realized their first projects with small-scale buildings - such as the Chapel of the Dead in their home town of Weiler or the Frödischbrücke in Muntlix . Subsequently, Marte.Marte planned a number of buildings in the fields of culture, education, infrastructure and health in addition to a large number of private buildings.

In 2004, Marte.Marte received the Austrian State Prize for Architecture for the office building of the company System Industrie Electronics in Millennium Park Lustenau . The monograph Marte.Marte Architects , published in 2008 by Springer-Verlag, was awarded the state prize for the most beautiful book in Austria and received a silver medal in Leipzig for the award for the most beautiful books in the world .   In 2016 Marte.Marte were invited by Alejandro Aravena to take part in the central themed exhibition of the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. Marte.Marte are currently working on two museums in Berlin and Krems and the new exhibition halls in Dornbirn.

architecture

Her designs are characterized by "rigid abstraction, reduction and an unmistakable understanding of the respective location". The German architecture critic and journalist Jürgen Tietz counts Marte.Marte "among the internationally respected representatives of contemporary Austrian architecture": With their formally reduced concrete buildings they would create exciting spatial works of art and thus add a new chapter to the high-quality Vorarlberg architecture, wrote Tietz in 2010 Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

Otto Kapfinger writes in a book published by the Marte brothers that Marte.Marte create “strong, authentic places” “without even touching on romanticized conceptions of the genius loci or the continuation of regional forms. This brings their attitude, the hermetic elegy of their buildings into concordance with global perspectives, connects them with other concepts of modern architecture that keep away from the formal and technical heroism of classical modernism. "

The exhibition curator Kristin Feireiss writes in a catalog she edited for the exhibition Appearing Sculptural in the Architekturforum Aedes Berlin:

“What distinguishes the architecture of the brothers Stefan and Bernhard Marte is that they unite apparent opposites into a uniform spatial composition: the buildings are minimalist, but rich in their sensual and haptic experience. They are modern, but blend in harmoniously with the landscape and the neighboring traditional buildings. They are radical, but extremely sensitive to context. They are monolithic, but unfold a spatial wealth that touches all the senses and is captivating. "
