Churches and chapels

Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Batschuns

Clemens Holzmeister received the order to build his first church in 1921 from chaplain Albert Drexel. The church was built from 1921 to 1923 as the first church in Vorarlberg in the style of the interwar period. The foundation walls for a neo-Gothic building were already in place when the new project was implemented against great opposition. Holzmeister anticipated a few things that would become important in his later churches: on the one hand, the adoption of elements from the local building culture (including materials and craftsmanship details) and, on the other hand, the formal enhancement of the building to become emblematic. The church shows stylistic traces of expressionism in accordance with the time of its construction . A restoration took place in 1971/72.

The architects Bernhard and Stefan Marte from Weiler planned the cemetery expansion and the funeral hall in 2002 - which was discussed in a similar way to the church building at the time.
