Montafon local history museum in Schruns

The Montafoner Heimatmuseum Schruns is located in the market town of Schruns in the Montafon in the Bludenz district in Vorarlberg . The Montafon Heimatschutzverein is the sponsor of the Heimatmuseum and the owner of the collection.

history

In 1906, a group of locals interested in local history began to collect rare animals, plants and minerals in the Montafon and then to exhibit them. Under the direction of the Schruns headmaster Johann Wiederin, the now extensive collection was supplemented by old furniture, pictures and works of art. A suitable location for the collection was found in the Frühmesshaus in Silvrettastraße, and so on June 12, 1921 the “Montafon Heritage Protection Museum” was ceremoniously opened in Schruns.

In 1978 the museum moved to the Kirchplatz in Schruns in an old Montafon estate house (in the gable, referenced 1710; Rhaeto-Romanic building; formerly the seat of the mountain judges), which was renovated and supplemented by a new building. This optimal combination offers the possibility in the two differently equipped buildings to optimally present the exhibits according to current knowledge. It houses cultural assets from all over the valley and provides information about the way of life of the Montafon people. While showcases are set up in the new building, the old building offers a tour of the living culture and working world of the Montafon: farm equipment collection, folklore and art history, works of art from the Gothic and Baroque periods (including former high altar figures from the Schruns parish church by Josef Klemens Witwer from Imst , around 1790).

A small room is set up as a school class with the obligatory teacher's desk, the harmonium and the fixed wooden benches. Here eight school levels were taught simultaneously. Josef Zurkirchen's “Montafon Archive”, which is also housed here, is accessible for study purposes by prior arrangement.

Museum building

From 1921 to 1978 the Frühmesshaus was used as a museum. In 1978 an old state house and the former seat of the mountain judge were moved into as a museum. The building, which is essentially medieval, shows the year 1710 in the gable. The building was renovated for the museum and supplemented by a new building.

There was an architecture competition for a new building for the museum, which the Marte.Marte Architects won in November 2009 . In 2011, however, there was a rejection of the Schruns municipal council. In November 2011 there was also a public survey on the planned new museum building and the proposal by the architects Marte / Marte with a reduced type of concrete was rejected by the population.
