history

Aedes was founded in 1980 in Grolmanstrasse in Berlin by Kristin Feireiss and Helga Retzer , then head of the DAAD's Berlin artist program and friend of the English artist Eduardo Paolozzi . "In memoriam Kongresshalle Berlin" was the title of the opening exhibition in Charlottenburg, which follows the model of the "Spaced Gallery" founded in 1975 by the New York architect and author Judith Newman York.

On June 3, 1989, the then Aedes Gallery moved to the arches of the Stadtbahn at Savignyplatz .

The second much-noticed exhibition in the context of Berlin as a European City of Culture in 1988 was "Berlin - Monument or Model of Thinking", which shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall addressed the risks and opportunities of a divided city. Important German and foreign artists and architects such as Daniel Libeskind, Gottfried Böhm and Coop Himmelb (l) au were involved in this "open design concept" for the former capital, which was shown as a traveling exhibition as part of Berlin as a European City of Culture in Kiev , Vienna and Paris , Rob Krier , Zaha Hadid, Otto Steidle , Franco Stella , Peter Cook , Gustav Peichl , Axel Schultes , Claus Bury and Lebbeus Woods .

From 1995 Aedes had a second branch in the east, which Kristin Feireiss and Hans-Jürgen Commerell opened in 1995 under the name Aedes East in the Hackesche Höfe in Berlin-Mitte , from 1996 with the participation of the cultural scientist Ulla Giesler.

The work of the Architekturforum has received several awards and honors. In 2001 Kristin Feireiss was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her commitment to the mediation of architecture and the strengthening of bilateral relations .

The Architekturforum Aedes has been located on Pfefferberg in Prenzlauer Berg since June 2006 .
