Lebbeus Bigelow Woods (born May 31, 1940 in Lansing , Michigan , † October 30, 2012 in New York City , New York ) was an American artist and architect .

Life

He studied architecture at the University of Illinois and Purdue University . After completing his studies, he worked in the offices of Eero Saarinen , but in 1976 switched to experimental projects and architectural theory.

As an architect, Woods designed buildings in Chengdu , China and Havana , Cuba. In 1988 Woods founded the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture, a not-for-profit institution promoting experimental architecture.

Lebbeus Woods taught as a professor of architecture at the Cooper Union in New York .

Influences on contemporary media

Woods influenced the sets of an alternate version of Alien 3 (directed by Vincent Ward) and 12 Monkeys .

In the summer of 1990, Woods was hired as a concept artist for the film Alien 3 and designed various sketches for possible alien colonies . The film was never realized under Vincent Ward, which means that Wood's designs were not adopted. The final Alien 3 film adaptation was eventually adopted by David Fincher without Woods designs.

Since Terry Gilliam, producer of the film 12 Monkeys , was inspired by Woods drawing "Neomechanical Tower (Upper) Chamber" (1987) and adopted the design for the interrogation room almost unchanged, Woods sued Universal Studios for the theft of its design. The court found the design to be almost identical and prompted Universal to withdraw the film from the market and remove all scenes based on Woods' ideas from the film material. Woods relented, however, and allowed Universal to distribute the film again, but received a six-figure compensation for this.

Light Pavilion

Wood's only completed project is the Light Pavilion in Chengdu , China . It is a collaboration with Christoph a. Kumpusch and the architect Steven Holl, in whose building complex, the Sliced Porosity Block, the Light Pavilion is integrated over four floors. Woods describes his architecture as experimental, both conceptually and creatively. The shape of the Light Pavilion is not geometric or static, but dynamic and unconventional, which is intended to encourage visitors to explore the stairs and platforms within the complex. The shape of the Light Pavilion also opposes the geometric shape of the surrounding building.

In the evening the Light Pavilion is illuminated and depending on the season, month, day or holiday it shines in a different color. Woods himself said that he wanted to expand the experiences and viewing habits of society, because "our fast-paced world constantly places new demands on us in order to understand things and act accordingly, and asks us to perceive completely new dimensions of experience".
