The Forum Frohner is an art museum on Minoritenplatz in Stein an der Donau , a district of the Lower Austrian town of Krems an der Donau . The museum named after the artist Adolf Frohner was opened in 2007 and is located in a building by the architect Lukas Göbl , which was built on the site of the former Minorist monastery . The museum is operated by the Kunstmeile Krems Betriebsges.mbH

The focus of the exhibition activities is on the artistic work of Adolf Frohner, which is juxtaposed with national and international artists in changing exhibitions. In the first ten years there were over 25 exhibitions with more than 200 national and international artists.

To the program

The Forum Frohner, dedicated to Adolf Frohner , is an exhibition platform that follows the artist's wish to create a meeting place here. The focus is on the discourse between artistic positions and the debate on current social issues. The layout of the building, which was completed in 2007 and opens up as a white cube towards the architectural ensemble of the historic Minoritenplatz, refers to this substantive accent of the Forum Frohner.

In the Forum Frohner, impulsive topics from the work of Adolf Frohner are taken up and related in changing presentations with national and international positions of the same time as well as aspects of contemporary art. On the one hand, the artistic work of Adolf Frohner is illuminated anew, on the other hand, the examination of his thinking creates a space in which one can concentrate outside the gears on undiscovered connections, tendencies, correlations and social issues. The range of exhibitions ranges from individual presentations to group exhibitions and thematic approaches and includes positions from post-war modernism as well as contemporary and young tendencies.

The exhibition activity is deepened by a scientific discourse in the form of symposia, discussion groups and round tables. Accompanying international expert discussions as well as events from the fields of film, literature, philosophy and music in conjunction with current exhibitions expand the spectrum of content.

About history

The Forum Frohner was opened in 2007 and is a building by the architect Lukas Göbl , which fits into the ensemble of the Minorite monastery as a contemporary white cube and, according to the idea of the forum (a square / marketplace / meeting point since ancient times) as a place of conversation and discourse is open to the Minoritenplatz.

In the context of the Krems Art Mile , which from 2019 includes the Kunsthalle Krems with the Dominican Church , the Krems Caricature Museum and the Minorite Church as well as the Lower Austria State Gallery , the Forum Frohner sees itself as an exhibition and event platform that, thanks to its special flair and intimate architecture as well Frohner's dedication can be an open (thinking) space. In the publication Five Years of the Frohner Forum, Dieter Ronte , artistic director of the house from 2007 to 2015, writes : “Adolf Frohner decided not to want his own museum (only for dead artists), but rather a forum in which exciting cultural work can be done. "It is there that Lukas Göbl writes about architecture:" The emphatically simple and authentic materials and forms evoke the 'roughness' and 'subtle brutality' of Adolf Frohner's art. "This is how Adolf Frohner's world of ideas remains palpable in the program and the architecture.

To architecture

Rear of the windowless Forum Frohner building

The synthesis of historical architecture and contemporary standards appears characteristic of the building. Forum Frohner is kept simple, geometric and simple. Everything that is superfluous has been omitted, there are also no windows. The lighting is done with controllable artificial light. Color and materials refer to the Minoritenkirche as well as to Frohner's work. The Heradesign panel on the ceiling is reminiscent of Frohner's mattress pictures, while the gray color of the magnesia terrazzo floor reflects the reduced color scheme of the Minorite Church.
