When moving-mouth puppets are called those people out of dolls , which can move by opening and closing the hand of the mouth - it folds open and shut. The clamshell technique is therefore mostly used to represent speaking or singing figures. It is used in particular in ventriloquism .

Well-known snap-mouth figures are Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street , as well as the Muppets . Neville Tranter with his Stuffed Puppet Theater ( Netherlands ) has become internationally known for its snap-mouth figures. One of the best-known German ensembles that predominantly used this technique was the Klappmaul Theater (1975-2005) from Frankfurt am Main . The NDR puppet series Hallo Spencer , which was produced in 275 episodes from 1979 to 2001, also used the technique of the snap-mouth dolls .
