Gerhard Ruiss (born May 29, 1951 in Ziersdorf ) is an Austrian author , musician , cultural advocate and publicist.

life and work

Ruiss has lived in Vienna since 1958 . From 1965 to 1969 he attended the vocational school for graphic arts there. After completing his apprenticeship as a typesetter at the Austrian State Printing House , he completed two semesters at the grammar school for working people. He then worked as a typesetter and reproduction photographer . The first literary publications followed in 1972, and in 1978 his first cultural journalistic work appeared in collaboration with Hannes Vyoral , a documentation on the situation of young Austrian authors. In addition, he occasionally appears as the artistic director of his station, noiseless radio, as a director, (improvisation) actor, presenter, entertainer or lecture traveler. In 2020 he received the HC Artmann Prize for his poetic work .

From 1984 to 1995 he taught as a lecturer at various institutes at the universities of Salzburg , Innsbruck and Vienna . After 2000 he was active in cultural management training at the Institute for German Studies in Innsbruck and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . In 2012 he received the title of professor.

The main topics of his cultural journalistic work include publishing, the book market, copyright and contract law, education and media policy, contemporary censorship and Austria-related topics. The main focus of his artistic work are poems, literary short forms, dramatic texts, fingerings of reality, chansons or satirical hits. Between 2007 and 2010 he brought out around three volumes with adaptations of songs by the late medieval singer Oswald von Wolkenstein . The commitment to a practice-oriented, lively exchange with dramatic pieces, content and their authors can be seen e.g. B. in the play exchange catalog - Austrian Dramatics of the Present , a reference work for newly published plays and authors, which was created in cooperation with writers, theater publishers and the IG Autorinnen Authors (last published in 2014).

Media policy activities

Gerhard Ruiss is considered to be one of the leading Austrian experts on copyright, publishing and the book market. For many years he campaigned for various concerns of authors (such as artists' social insurance or improvements to the laws on promoting culture), including in various functions. In 1979 he became a member of the board of directors of IG Authors Authors , and in 1982 he took on the role of managing director. From 1987 until he left in 1989 he was Vice President of the Graz Authors' Assembly . In 1998 he became a member of the Austrian UNESCO Commission, of which he is a member of the ARGE cultural diversity. He also worked in the literary mechana . He is also a founding member of the Independent House of Literature Lower Austria.

Ruiss is always present in the media as a spokesman for cultural matters. As a spokesman for the Austrian initiative “Art is Right”, he campaigned for the remunerated use of creative works in digital media. In connection with this professional commitment, he was awarded the “Wolfgang Lorenz Memorial Prize for Internet-Free Minutes” from the Austrian network community . For a long time he has been advocating remuneration for secondary uses of creative work, together with other artists and representatives of the creative professions.
