On the occasion of the first Austrian writers' congress in 1981, the then IG Authors took the opportunity to formulate the concerns of the authors in Austria as central cultural-political concerns under the title The freedom to see where one remains . In the following years there were considerable improvements in the economic situation of writers, among other things through the library royalty and a large number of grants and grants for literary creation. Human rights have also been and are addressed by the IG by repeatedly supporting and disseminating signature campaigns and petitions for threatened colleagues.

World Book Day on 23 April 2008 founded the IG authors authors together with the Association of German writers and writers , the Federal Association of Young Authors and authors of Switzerland , the Coalition for Fair Publishing .

The IG publishes author handbooks on a case-by-case basis and the author's information magazine, Autorensolidarität , every quarter . President is Renate Welsh , Vice-Presidents are Peter Turrini and Anna Mitgutsch , Managing Director Gerhard Ruiss ; all re-elected at the 2016 General Assembly.

The prerequisite for personal membership is writing and publishing. Membership is free. Regardless of their membership, all Austrian authors are entitled to contact the IG with job-specific questions.

On January 13, 1988, the association IG Authors Tirol was registered with the association police in Innsbruck with the same statutes as IG Authors Austria. The purpose of this regional dependence is to support authors in the event of unexpected events and local court proceedings. Members are authors of the IG residing in Tyrol. The triggering founding event in 1988 was a trial about the freedom of art using the case study Helmuth Schönauer and his story Pontlatz . In the process, the author was acquitted at the Innsbruck Regional and Higher Regional Court. The first president of IG Authors Tirol (IGAT) was Walter Klier .
