The W Series is an international racing series that uses Formula 3 racing cars.

The racing series has been taking place since 2019, is organized by the British Racing and Sports Car Club and markets itself through the private company W Series Limited . Only women can take part as drivers.

history

A racing series with a similar concept already existed between 2004 and 2007 with the Formula Woman , but which was held with sports cars instead of monoposto racing cars.

In November 2017, plans for an all-female racing series at top level, which was to be called the “SHE Championship”, became public for the first time. The company changed its name shortly thereafter and officially launched the series in October 2018. For the first season, prize money of $ 1.5 million and free participation if the application process has been successfully completed has been announced. While David Coulthard and Adrian Newey were introduced as supporters of the series, the announcement was particularly criticized by Pippa Mann ; and Sophia Flörsch reacted critically. The main point of criticism is the separation of female and male drivers, which is less of a promotion and more of a separation from male-dominated motorsport. Ex-Formula E driver Simona de Silvestro said the prize money would be better off in the form of a junior support program. Director Catherine Bond Muir is considered to be the creator and driving force of the series.

The first season began on May 4, 2019 in Hockenheim as part of the DTM supporting program. 18 drivers were selected from a pool of 61 candidates in the application process and took part in the season. This season's champion was Jamie Chadwick .

The twelve best-placed drivers of the 2019 season automatically qualified for the second season of the series. In September 2019, another selection round with 14 candidates took place in Almería . On March 25, 2020, the DTM announced that it would postpone several race weekends to the second half of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The W Series then decided to cancel all races for 2020 and not return to the racetrack until 2021. The drivers come in 2020 in an e-sports to -Liga, which was created in addition to life.

The starting places will be allocated in an application process that consisted of ten modules in 2019 - in addition to racing skills, fitness, dealing with the media and sponsor pitches were tested. The sporting regulations of the W Series state that the size of the grid depends on the maximum number of starters allowed in the license of the respective venue.
