Friedrich Wilhelm Eduard Herkt (born June 2, 1805 in Glogau ; † December 23, 1877 in Breslau ) was royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently inspector of the 3rd artillery inspection.

His parents were Johann Christian Herkt and his wife Anna Rosina Bretschneider . His father was a sergeant in the Silesian Rifle Battalion and died on October 16, 1813 in the Battle of Leipzig .

Life

He joined the 6th Artillery Brigade as a gunner on November 1, 1822 . From 1825 to 1827 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . At that time he was appointed Portepeef Ensign on April 11, 1826, and on April 11, 1829 he was then Second Lieutenant. From October 1, 1839 to September 30, 1840 he was posted to the teaching cadron. Appointed Premier Lieutenant on June 19, 1842, he joined the 3rd Artillery Brigade as a captain on February 27, 1847. During the first Schleswig War in 1848, it proved itself in fortifying the Eckernförde Bay .

He was promoted to major on November 4, 1854 and transferred as an artillery officer from the square to the Luxembourg fortress . From there he came on January 1, 1857 as a department commander in the 3rd Artillery Regiment and there on May 31, 1859 promoted to lieutenant colonel. On September 12, 1861, he came to Wesel Fortress as a commander , and was assigned to the 3rd Artillery Brigade à la suite . He was promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class, with ribbon on January 24, 1863 . On January 24, 1863, he joined the 1st Artillery Brigade as a brigadier. On June 25, 1864, he became commander of the brigade and a la suite of Field Artillery Regiment No. 1. He was promoted to major general on June 18, 1865 and on December 12, 1865, he was transferred to the 6th Artillery Brigade as commander.

During the mobilization for the German war he was commander of the artillery of the VI. Army Corps . During the campaign he was able to distinguish himself in the battle of Königgrätz . From there he returned on September 17, 1866 as a commander in the 6th Artillery Brigade and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on September 20, 1866 . On March 22, 1868 he was initially given the character of Lieutenant General, on May 14, 1869 he was granted the patent as Lieutenant General and was transferred to the 3rd Artillery Inspection as an inspector.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War , he was appointed commander of the artillery of the 3rd Army on July 18, 1870 . He fought in the battles near Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan and on Mont Valerien . For Sedan he received the Iron Cross 2nd class . During the siege of Paris (1870–1871) on September 27, 1870, he was given command of the entire artillery of all army corps standing in front of Paris. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Bavarian Military Order of Merit on November 12, 1870 , on January 23, 1871 with the Grand Cross with Swords of the Württemberg Order of Frederick , on April 13 with the Iron Cross 1st Class and on June 16, 1871 with awarded the star to the Order of the Red Eagle.

He returned to his peacetime position on July 4, 1871, but was then put up for retirement on July 13, 1871 . On October 10, 1871, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Saxon Order of Albrecht . He died in Breslau on December 23, 1877.

He married on October 6, 1847 in Breslau Maria Johanna Ludowike von Ernst (* December 10, 1817; December 5, 1898), a daughter of the chief forester Heinrich von Ernst and his wife Renate Feyerabend . His son Ernst was a second lieutenant in the field artillery regiment No. 6 in 1876.
