Karl Deinhardt (born January 13, 1887 as Karl David in Heidelberg ; † March 3, 1966 in Kaufbeuren ) was a German Lieutenant General in the Air Force in World War II .

Life

Deinhardt joined the 2nd Baden Grenadier Regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm I." No. 110 of the Prussian Army as a volunteer in April 1906 . When the First World War broke out , he trained as a flight observer and pilot and worked for various aviation departments. In addition to the two classes of the Iron Cross, he received the Silver Karl Friedrich Military Merit Medal , the Silver Badische Merit Medal and the Military Pilot Badge for his work .

After the end of the war, he was initially accepted into the provisional Reichswehr , but Deinhardt continued his military career as an officer in the Reichswehr. Most recently he worked there as a major and company commander in the 14th (Baden) Infantry Regiment . He then joined the Air Force.

Deinhardt was from October 1, 1936 to January 31, 1939, first as a lieutenant colonel , then as a colonel in command of the Kaufbeuren air base . On May 23, 1938, "Karl David" announced its name change to "Karl Deinhardt" in the Kaufbeurer national newspaper. After the death of Mayor Hans Wildung in January 1943, the retired officer was appointed mayor of the city of Kaufbeuren by the National Socialists.

After the invasion of US troops on April 27, 1945, he was initially left in office by military commander Major Craig S. Mattice. After the intervention of an "anti-fascist committee of Kaufbeurer citizens" under the leadership of the Social Democrat Robert Glöggler, the military government of Kaufbeur carried out an inspection, as a result of which the US inspector Lieutenant Colonel Wolfson both Deinhardt and Mattice were removed from their offices at the end of June 1945. At the suggestion of the anti-fascist committee, Georg Volkhardt, who was in office until 1933, was reinstated as mayor on July 1 .
