The Toro Rosso STR3 was the third Formula 1 race car of the Scuderia Toro Rosso and was in 13 of 18 races Formula 1 2008 season used. The first five races were driven with a B version of last year's STR2 .

Technology and development

Red Bull was responsible for developing the chassis , as Toro Rosso was the subsidiary racing team. The chassis of the STR3 was therefore identical to the Red Bull RB4 . The only difference was the engine. While Red Bull had a unit from Renault, Toro Rosso was supplied by Ferrari .

The STR3 was powered by a V8 Ferrari engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters, which was called the Ferrari Type 056 .

The standard supplier Bridgestone was responsible for the tires .

Painting and sponsorship

The basic color of the STR3 was dark blue due to the main sponsor Red Bull. The logo and lettering of the energy drink manufacturer gave the vehicle red accents.

driver

The drivers of the STR3 were the French Sébastien Bourdais and the German Sebastian Vettel . The test driver was Brendon Hartley from New Zealand .

2008 season

The STR3 makes its debut in Monaco.

The start of the season with the STR2B did not go well for the team. Sebastian Vettel retired four times in five races and finished one race in 17th position. Sébastien Bourdais finished the season opener in seventh and scored two points. In the following four races, however, he was eliminated three times and was once 15th.

When the racing car made its Grand Prix debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel was in fifth position and scored more points than in the previous five races. Team-mate Bourdais dropped out in twelfth position due to a driving error. In the next race in Canada, both drivers crossed the finish line - Vettel took eighth place and another world championship point and Bourdais came in 13th.

This was followed by two races without points for the team. At the British Grand Prix, the race was already over for Vettel on the first lap after a collision with David Coulthard.

At the tenth round of the season in Germany, Vettel again finished eighth. Bourdais finished twelfth. One race later, Bourdais reached position 18 - Vettel retired prematurely with an overheated engine. At the Belgian Grand Prix , both drivers crossed the finish line in the points. Vettel was fifth and Bourdais seventh.

The race weekend for the Italian Grand Prix already caused a sensation during qualifying. Sebastian Vettel secured the first pole position of his career under wet conditions, which was also the first pole position for Scuderia Toro Rosso. In the race, which also took place under wet conditions, Vettel also secured his first Grand Prix victory, which in turn was the first victory for Toro Rosso. Bourdais finished 18th in that race.

In the four remaining races of the season, Vettel drove into the points three more times, while his teammate remained without any further points.

Overall, Scuderia Toro Rosso scored 37 World Championship points with the STR3. With the two other points from the first five races, they finished sixth in the constructors' championship.
