The Toro Rosso STR2 was a Formula 1 race car, which the Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2007 in -1 formula began World Championship.
Development history and technology
The STR2 was the second racing car under the name Toro Rosso to be used in Formula 1 races after the takeover of Minardi by Red Bull GmbH from Dietrich Mateschitz . The STR2 was largely based on the chassis of the Red Bull RB3 , which Red Bull Racing , Mateschitz's second racing team in the Formula 1 World Championship, had also reported for the 2007 season.
For the entire 2007 season, the STR2 came under criticism from Frank Williams , owner of Williams F1 , and Colin Kolles , team principal of Spyker F1 . Both argued that the STR2 violated the regulations that, in their opinion, required each team to develop its own chassis. Despite the ongoing allegations, Toro Rosso contested all of the year’s world championship races with the STR2.
Both the RB3 and the STR2 were developed by Adrian Newey . After Red Bull had changed the engine supplier and now relied on racing engines from Renault , Toro Rosso took over the existing supply contract with Ferrari . In STR2 therefore, the 2.4-liter came V8 Motorn of type 056 are used. At the beginning of the year, the STR2 was driven by Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi and American Scott Speed . After the European Grand Prix there was a dispute between Speed and Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost . According to Speed, Tost rammed his fist in the back and hit a wall. After this incident, Scott Speed was replaced by Sebastian Vettel from the Hungarian Grand Prix .
Racing history
The STR2 made its racing debut in March 2007 at the Australian Grand Prix . While Liuzzi was one lap behind Kimi Räikkönen in the Ferrari F2007, he finished 14th, while Speed retired after 28 laps due to tire damage.
It soon became apparent that the STR2 could not meet the expectations of the team management. As the RB3 progressed, Toro Rosso was almost on the spot for the entire season. Only once did you get into the points when Vettel finished fourth at the Chinese Grand Prix .
With these eight points, the team placed seventh in the final ranking in the constructors' championship. In 2008 the car was first replaced by the 2B and then by the STR3 later in the year .
