Clifford Johnson

Clifford Victor Johnson (born March 5, 1968 in London ) is a British theoretical physicist who specializes in string theory , black holes , quantum gravity and related fields. He is a professor at the University of Southern California .

Johnson graduated from Imperial College London with a bachelor's degree in 1989 and received his PhD from the University of Southampton in 1992 (with Tim Morris). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Institute for Advanced Study until 1994 and then at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara . From 1995 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky and in 2003 Professor at the University of Southern California.

He is a scientific advisor to the Discovery Channel and has appeared in various documentaries such as The Universe (2007) . Johnson founded the African Summer Theory Institute (ASTI), a month-long conference at various locations in Africa, which took place in Cape Town in 2004.

He wrote a standard work on D-brane .

In 2005 he received the Maxwell Medal and in 1997 a National Science Foundation Career Award.
