The Universe (Original title: The Universe , DVD titles: Our Universe ) was a documentary series on the History Channel about facts and phenomena in the field of cosmology . The first episode aired on May 29, 2007.

With footage from NASA and sophisticated animations , the documentation is dedicated to various topics such as the Big Bang theory , supernovae , black holes , galaxies , solar systems , stars , planets , dark matter , gravitation , the speed of light , strings , historical asteroid impacts , constellations or astrobiology .
Furthermore, hypotheses on nemesis , extraterrestrial life , time travel or parallel universes are treated.
Renowned scientists in the fields of physics , astrophysics and astronomy have their say in interviews , who vividly explain cosmological facts and phenomena.
The introduction to each episode begins in the original with the following sentences:
“In the beginning, there was darkness, and then, bang - giving birth to an endless, expanding existence of time, space and matter. Now, see further than we've ever imagined, beyond the limits of our existence, in a place we call The Universe. "
In the German version, the translation varies between the seasons. In the fourth season it is:
“In the beginning there was nothing, and then: The endlessly expanding dimensions of space, time and matter emerged. New and amazing discoveries are made every day that help unravel the incomprehensible secrets of the universe. "

Production and broadcast
Seasons 1-4 were produced from 2010 to 2011 by Sunfilm Entertainment (Tiberius Film) on DVD . The 5th season DVD was released by Polyband Medien in 2012. In addition, other sets and boxes were released as Blu-ray .
The series was classified as FSK: no age restriction, INFO program according to § 14 JuSchG.
It was broadcast on German television in 2013 on History , N24 and n-tv .
