Geoffrey Marcy
Geoffrey William Marcy (born September 29, 1954 in St. Clair Shores , Michigan ) is an American astronomer and astrophysicist , best known for his discoveries of exoplanets .
Life
Marcy graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in physics and astronomy in 1976 with summa cum laude . In 1982 he received his PhD in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz . After an assistant at the Carnegie Institution of Washington (1982-1984) he became an associate professor in physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University . Since 1999 he has also held a chair in astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley .
He became internationally known for his discoveries of extrasolar planets. He discovered 70 of the first 100 known exoplanets. Marcy also confirmed with R. Paul Butler the discovery of the first exoplanet in a sun-like system (that of 51 Pegasi ) by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz (1995).
In 2012 Geoffrey Marcy took over the Watson and Marilyn Alberts Chair in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) , an endowed professorship at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley , whose research topic is the search for extraterrestrial intelligence .
Since 2013 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations .
He resigned from his office in October 2015 because of the sexual harassment of students.
