name of the city

An expedition led by the French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the lake Lac Sainte-Claire , as they discovered it on August 12, 1679. This day falls on Clare of Assisi in the calendar of saints . On English maps the lake is already listed as Saint Clare in 1710 . The Mitchell map , published in 1755, uses the St. Clair spelling . Sometimes the name is also associated with Arthur St. Clair . This was a general in the American Revolutionary War and governor of the Northwest Territory , but the name of the lake was in use in the current spelling long before St. Clair was known. However, it is possible that the naming of various political entities near the lake and the river of the same name was favored by the general's fame, such as St. Clair County , St. Clair Township and the cities of St. Clair and St. Clair Shores.

The origin of the name is also incorrectly associated with Patrick Sinclair . He was a British officer who bought land on the St. Clair River near the Pine River . There he built Fort Sinclair in 1764 , which was used for almost twenty years before it was abandoned.

history

Today's St. Clair Shores began in a settlement that was built around 1779 under the name L'Anse Creuse (French; German about deep bay ). When the settlement was incorporated as a Village in 1925 , it was given its current name. The hamlets of Lake Shore and Eagle Point also merged into the new village. Two years later, St. Slair Shores received a post office. In 1950 the place was incorporated as a city .

A lighthouse was built in the middle of the 19th century. Its operator was one of the organizations that eventually formed today's United States Coast Guard . In 1941, it opened the St. Clair Flats guard station, the first coast guard station on Lake St. Clair. This coast guard station has been located in St. Clair Shores since 1990, after having had a branch here since 1954.
