Selenicereus testudo is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Pitaya de Tortuga".
description
Selenicereus testudo grows epiphytically or lithophytically , climbing or hanging with richly branched shoots . The shoots have aerial roots on the underside . They reach a diameter of up to 8 centimeters and are divided into sections up to 25 centimeters long. Your three to eight thin and wing-like ribs are often arranged on one side and between 1 and 3 centimeters high. The up to 10 (or more) brownish thorns are spread out and 1 to 2 centimeters long.
The white, widely spreading flowers often have a somewhat one-sided symmetrical flower envelope . They are up to 15 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 15 centimeters. The pericarpel and the long flower tube are covered with small scales and brown hair 1 to 3 centimeters long. The yellow, spherical fruits are thorny and reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The pulp is white.
Distribution and systematics
Selenicereus testudo is distributed in southern Mexico , Guatemala , Belize , Honduras , Nicaragua , Costa Rica and Colombia . The first description as Cereus testudo was published in 1837 by Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinsky (1780–1855). Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Selenicereus in 1965 .
The systematic position of the species is unclear. Ralf Bauer suggested in 2003 to recognize the genus Strophocactus again and to classify it there.
