Southgate in Wayne County

Southgate is a city in Wayne County in the US state Michigan with 30,136 inhabitants (2000). It was the last area from the former Ecorse Township to achieve city status. Southgate belongs to the group of localities that are located south of Detroit in the vicinity of the Detroit River and are known as downrivers .

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city area is 17.8 km², the mean height is 182 m. Southgate is bordered by the towns of Riverview (south), Wyandotte (east), Allen Park (northwest), Taylor (west), and Lincoln Park (north). The city is bounded by Goddard Road to the north , M-85 / Fort Street to the east, Pennsylvania Road to the south, and Allen Road to the west. About ten kilometers west of Southgate is the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport .

Southgate is home to The News-Herald , a local downriver magazine that covers more than 20 communities. The Southgate Sentinel also existed in this area in the late 1950s and 1960s .

history

There are two theories about the origin of the city name. The first assumes that Southgate is the southern gateway to metropolitan Detroit. The other traces the city name back to an initiative of the first mayor Thomas J. Anderson, who in 1953 chose the name of the city still to be founded after a shopping center and had this name approved by the planning committee.

Anderson became the city's first mayor in 1958 after serving five years in the leadership of what was then Ecorse Township. One of the city's high schools is named after him.

At the 2000 census , the city had 30,136 inhabitants, almost 94% of them white , the remainder being split between African-Americans (2.11%), American Indians (0.50%), Asians (1.67%) and others Ethnic groups. Hispanics or Latinos made up 3.98% of the population. The per capita income was $ 23,219 and 4.6% of the population was below the poverty line .

In the News-Herald magazine , the Mayor of Southgate stated that the city is the " Dining Capital of Downriver ". The city has numerous restaurant chains and restaurants with different national cuisines.

The city has six private schools, several elementary, middle and high schools , and one college and two universities: Dorsey Business School (Business College), Madonna University (Downriver Campus), and Northwood University (Southgate Campus) .
