Sterling Heights is the second largest city in Macomb County in Michigan , United States , with 129,699 inhabitants (2010) . The United States Census Bureau's estimate for 2007 was 127,349 residents, making Sterlin Heights the fourth most populous city in the state . The city's motto is "To Strive on Behalf of All".

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of ​​95.0  km² , of which 94.9 km² is land and 0.1 km² (= 0.14%) is water. The area of Sterling Heights falls into the catchment area of the Clinton River .

Sterling Heights is located on Michigan State Route 53 and Michigan State Route 59 . The M-53 splits into Van Dyke Avenue and the Van Dyke Expressway in the city, but reunites both north of the city and then heads towards The Thumb . The M-59 is the main northern link between Macomb County and Oakland County .

Clockwise, starting in the west, the towns of Troy , Utica, Michigan , Shelby Township , Clinton Township , Warren and Fraser border on Sterling Heights.

history

Before incorporation in 1968, Sterling Heights was a township known as Jefferson Township from 1836 to 1838 and then Sterling Township. Until the 1950s, the town was in an agricultural area where rhubarb and other produce were harvested that were then sold in Detroit.

There was already a small Michigan village called Sterling , and when Michigan law prohibited multiple incorporated parishes from using the same name, Sterling Township eventually became Sterling Heights. Gerald Donovan became the first mayor of the new city .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Sterling Height inhabited 124,471 people. The population density was 1311.6 people per km ². There were 47,547 housing units at an average of 501.0 per km². The Sterling Heights population was 90.70% White , 1.30% Black or African-American , 0.21% Native , 4.92% Asian , 0.04% Pacific immigrant , 0.34% said of belonging to other races and 2.50% named two or more races. 1.34% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The median household income in Sterling Heights was 60,494 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 70,140 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 51,207 versus $ 31,489 for women. The per capita income was $ 24,958. 5.2% of the population and 4.0% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 6.6% of minors and 7.5% of those aged 65 and over.

The city's residents are predominantly descendants of Poles (19.0%), Germans (14.4%), Italians (12.5%), Irish (5.7%), British (5.0%), Assyrians ( also called Aramaeans or Chaldeans) (4.8%) and Americans (4.0%).
