Clinton Township is a charter township in Macomb County in Michigan , United States in the metropolitan area of Detroit just east of Sterling Heights .

The area was settled in 1782, founded in 1818 as Huron Township after an adjacent river, but renamed in 1824 in honor of DeWitt Clinton and the adjacent river in conflict with the actual Huron River . In 1989, the township received further privileges as a Charter Township , a special feature of the state of Michigan.

There is a partnership with the Japanese city of Yasu .
