Career

At the end of the season, he was voted the league's best rookie goalkeeper. In the 2006/07 season he moved to the Alpena IceDiggers in the North American Hockey League . In the summer of 2007, Hunwick began studying history at the University of Michigan . During the year he joined the Michigan Wolverines ice hockey team and made his debut in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's game operations in March 2008 against the University of Nebraska at Omaha . Since he had little prospect of regular missions behind the goalkeeper Bryan Hogan , he suspended the 2008/09 season to later be eligible to play for another year in the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
In the 2009/10 season, Hunwick was again part of the Wolverines as a backup . After an injury to Hogans in February 2010, he became a regular goalkeeper and led his team to win the CCHA championship. This was followed by the award for Most Valuable Player . In the NCAA series for the national championship you lost in the quarterfinals. The next year, Hunwick was voted the CCHA's best goalkeeper. He also played in front of over 100,000 spectators in the world record game The Big Chill at the Big House and achieved a shutout in a 5-0 win . As third place in the CCHA, he and his team reached the final in the NCAA's Frozen Four final tournament, which was lost to the University of Minnesota Duluth after extra time . In the 2011/12 season he lost with the Wolverines the final of the CCHA championship against Western Michigan University and was one of the best goalkeepers within the NCAA. He finished the season with the third most wins and fourth most shutouts. He was voted into the CCHA Second All-Star Team and named January Player of the Month nationwide. He was also among the ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award .
A few days after ending his university career, Hunwick signed a tryout contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets from the National Hockey League on March 28, 2012 . They needed a second goalkeeper in the game against the Detroit Red Wings , since goalkeeper Steve Mason was injured in training. One day after his backup assignment in the NHL, the Blue Jackets provided him with a regular contract until the end of the season . On April 7, 2012, he made his debut in the NHL when he was the last three minutes in goal in the last game of the season against the New York Islanders . In July 2012, Hunwick signed a contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg . He played three times at the European Trophy 2012 for Salzburg before his contract was terminated at the end of August 2012. In October 2012 he took part in the training camp of the Providence Bruins from the American Hockey League . This sent him for the 2012/13 season to the farm team South Carolina Stingrays . There he played nine games and was transferred to the Utah Grizzlies in November 2012 . This dissolved the contract after two games. Two weeks later, Hunwick signed with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League and formed the goalkeeper duo with Sébastien Caron until the end of the season . On August 26, 2013, he ended his career and joined a player agency.
