Hartmut Backe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartmut Backe (born March 31, 1941 in Kolberg ) is a German experimental physicist. He was a professor at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Backe completed his Abitur in 1959 in Schnepfenthal and received his doctorate in 1969 from the TH Darmstadt . In 1970 he became a research assistant and then an academic advisor at the TH Darmstadt, where he became an academic senior advisor in 1980 and completed his habilitation. In 1980 he became a professor in Mainz and is now retired.

He deals with coherent X-ray generation by relativistic electrons and laser spectroscopy on transurans. He works on the Mainz Microtron (MAMI).

In 1980 he received the Röntgen Prize for the observation of positron generation after relativistic collisions with heavy nuclei (such as lead). Here the effects of quantum electrodynamics can be observed in strong fields.
