Mark Ronald Wells (* 18th September 1957 in St. Clair Shores , Michigan ) is a retired American ice hockey player , who at the Winter Olympics in 1980 in Lake Placid Olympic champion in ice hockey was.
Career
Mark Wells began his career as a hockey player with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings. From 1975 to 1979 he attended Bowling Green State University , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this period, he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 in the 13th round as a total of 176 players by the Canadiens de Montréal , for which he never played. Instead, he spent the 1979/80 season initially with Team USA during its Olympic preparation and then with the professional ice hockey teams Nova Scotia Voyageurs from the American Hockey League and Flint Generals from the International Hockey League . In the 1980/81 season , the center scored 43 scorer points for the New Haven Nighthawks from the AHL in 67 games, including 14 goals. In the 1981/82 season he was in the IHL for the Fort Wayne Komets and his ex-club Flint Generals on the ice. He also played 14 games for the Oklahoma City Stars from the Central Hockey League . He then ended his career at the age of 24.
International
For the United States , Wells took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . At the so-called Miracle on Ice , he and his team won the gold medal. He himself scored two goals and one assist in seven games over the course of the tournament.
In 2010, Wells sold his gold medal for $ 310,700 to pay for treatment for his serious illness.
