Johann Christoph von Knobelsdorf (* 1740 in Heinzendorf ; † April 17, 1803 in Glogau ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the infantry regiment "von Hiller" No. 37 .

Life

origin

Johann Christoph was the son of Balthasar Georg von Knobelsdorff (* 1713; † 1759) and his wife Justine. His father was a Prussian captain a. D. and heir to Heinzendorf.

Military career

In 1756 Knobelsdorff became a corporal in the infantry regiment "Kurssel" No. 37 of the Prussian Army . During the Seven Years' War he became ensign on December 1, 1757 and second lieutenant on December 23, 1759 . Knobelsdorff took part in the battles of Prague (wounded), Zorndorf and Kunersdorf as well as the battles of Zittau, Nachord and Landeshut as well as the sieges of Prague and Schweidnitz (wounded). After the war, he was made Prime Minister on September 13, 1767 . On October 31, 1773, he was staff captain and on August 4, 1778, he became captain and company commander . He took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and became major on May 12, 1784 . On June 1, 1787 he became the commander of the grenadier battalion of his regiment. On May 30, 1791 he became lieutenant colonel and as such Knobelsdorff took part in the campaign against France during the First Coalition War. He was at the sieges of Verdun , Mainz , Longwy, Landau as well as the battle near Kaiserslautern and the battles of Hochheim, Kolheim, Zweibrücken and Frankenthal. On February 14, 1793 he became a colonel and was awarded the Pour le Mérite order on July 26, 1793 for the siege of Mainz . On August 1, 1793, he finally became regimental commander. On February 26, 1799 Knobelsdorff diminished with a pension of 1000 thalers until a suitable commandant position became vacant. Before that, however, he died on April 17, 1803 in Glogau.

family

Knobelsdorff married Friederike Eleonore von Kurssel on October 19, 1774 in Bodelwitz (* May 20, 1744, † September 27, 1802 in Glogau). She was the daughter of his former boss , General Heinrich Adolf von Kurssel .
