Luigi Colani (born August 2, 1928 in Berlin , born Lutz Colani , † September 16, 2019 in Karlsruhe ) was a German designer .

Colani was known for his aerodynamic , biomorphic shapes for cars, airplanes and many other everyday objects. He referred to his organic design language as biodesign and defined this as a “humanization of the human-machine interface” through “ ergonomics and knowledge of the latest materials”. The universal claim of his 3D philosophy led to a corresponding optimization of almost all designable objects. Some colleagues and journalists sometimes judged Colani's designs to be “far ahead of their time”. Colani was also a respected designer in Japan and China.

Life

Luigi Colani was born in 1928 as the son of a Swiss ( Bündner from Madulain ) film architect of Kurdish origin and a Polish woman in Berlin-Friedenau . His mother worked as a prompter for the theater director Max Reinhardt . He grew up in Berlin-Johannisthal , right next to the first German airport, the Johannisthal-Adlershof airfield . Since his parents wanted to educate him to be creative at an early age, they did not give him any toys, but instead set up a craft room for him in which he was supposed to build his own toys. Like him, his siblings, two brothers and a sister, had to create their own toys. “My parents […] made things for me. They were both very skilled manual workers. I was the only schoolchild in the world who ran home after school to do handicrafts with them. ”At the age of four, the young Colani could already solder and tinker with the various materials, whether wood, iron, plaster or clay. its planes, ships or cars. "At the age of five I was already a gifted little sculptor." While still at school he had "made shoes for the women in the area [and the] family and changed clothes for himself."

He spent the end of the Second World War as an anti-aircraft helper in Saerbeck ( Münsterland ) and the following years as an assistant in the grain distillery during the semester break.

Colani studied sculpture and painting at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1946 and broke off his studies because “my professor couldn't teach me anything more in sculpture”. From 1949 to 1952 he studied aerodynamics and ultralight construction at the École polytechnique in Paris and then analytical philosophy at the Paris Sorbonne . In 1953 he worked for a year at the California aircraft manufacturer Douglas Aircraft Company as head of materials research in the New Materials division . From 1954 he designed plastic bodies for the car industry ( Simca ) in France and continued this from 1955 in Berlin. In the body shop business Erdmann & Rossi in Berlin he learned from the ground up the craft of Automobilbauens. After Fiat / Rometsch (1954), further work for Italian automobile companies such as Alfa Romeo and Lancia followed . In 1957, his Alfa Romeo was the first GT sports car in the world to drive around the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in under ten minutes . That year he renamed himself Luigi Colani.

In the 1960s to 1970s, he expanded his design activities to include furniture and everyday objects. He settled in the Westphalian town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück , a center of the furniture industry, and built up a designer team that ultimately consisted of 30 employees. First he designed furniture for the furniture store chain Asko from 1965, then for Cor , Fritz Hansen , Burkhard Lübke, Poggenpohl , Sulo (then Suloplast ) and its branded products "Caroline".

In 1971 Colani published a manifesto for new, biomorphic forms of design in all areas of society, which was called Ylem . Ylem in Middle English means the original substance from which all matter is formed. Ylem, in turn, is derived from the ancient Greek term for matter: ὕλη ( hūlē , hȳlē ). On 120 loose sheets of paper in a plastic case, he developed his ideas for a more humane society, primarily with drawings.

Harkotten Castle

From 1972 to 1981, the now wealthy Colani had his design studio at Harkotten Castle in Westphalia. The time at the design factory there became Colani's most intense creative period. Here he formed large teams with young designers who had just finished their studies. New interns came in every week, others left, and others came back. On average, the employees stayed for three to six months. Engineers from the aircraft industry and other branches of industry also wanted to expand their knowledge of ergonomic design. In total, several thousand employees have trained in Colani's studio. During this decade, Colani and his colleagues accepted orders from all industrialized countries, including the Soviet Union, and from all industries. "Harkotten became a kind of place of pilgrimage" for industry.

With increasing success, a proportion of the disputes with industrial customers, who were used to having their ideas about the appearance of a certain object implemented immediately and smoothly, also increased. Colani rejected these requirements and insisted on his freedom of creation. At the same time, he renounced a mediating tone and increasingly repelled customers with his confrontational manner. In general, Colani did not shy away from criticism, for example he often referred to his opponents as "idiots", as did those colleagues whom he considered incompetent. “In some cases [I] sure [regretted my choice of words] because very often I ran the ropes of jobs because I told people the truth on the head. In a world of lies, it is a very dangerous thing to tell the truth. "" With this kind of appearance he has done himself a lot of damage and made many enemies, "says Peter Weibel , head of the Karlsruhe Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) . Therefore, Colani does not get the appreciation here that actually deserves him.

The biggest problems were the executives and engineers of the German automotive industry. Their lack of willingness to innovate ultimately led to his emigration to Japan. “But because I've always kicked companies like Mercedes in the ass because of their backward forms, they have made it their business to make Colani impossible in Germany. And they did it too. It's weird that I can't get a foot on the ground in my own country and that I'm a super top figure everywhere else in the world. That's why I went. "

Japan and china

At the invitation of five Japanese companies, he set up a Colani design center in Japan as early as 1973. From 1982 he worked for five years in Japan as chief designer for several Japanese manufacturers of technical consumer goods such as Canon , Sony and Mazda . Here Colani worked at times with more than 300 employees on a wide variety of objects. Since then he has been regarded as an “absolute design authority” in Japan.

In general he found more understanding and enthusiasm in Asia, especially in Japan. There is a deeper connection with nature, and this means that you are far more open to your biomorphic design language than in the West. He was particularly impressed by the Japanese concept of kimochi , the universal energy ki in the human psyche. Contrary to the Western primacy of rationality, great importance is attached in the Far East to the fact that all things are made with emotions as a manifestation of ki , because only such objects would remain and survive.

In 1986 he returned to Europe, where he was based in a hangar near the Swiss capital Bern . Here, with the support of his friend Jürg Bärtschi, he developed and prepared a series of high-speed, low-fuel-consumption vehicles that he tested on the Utah salt lake in 1989 .

Following an invitation from the Chinese ambassador, his activities relocated to China in 1995, where he initially took on professorships for design at the University of Tongji in Shanghai and later at other universities. On the island of Chong Mingh in the Yangtze River Delta near Shanghai, he has realized his “life's work and legacy” since 1995, the Eco-City (formerly Bio-City), which is modeled on the human body in form and function: a science city for 50,000 scientists, which represents a human body lying on its back and is conceived as a living organism with a “green lung”, a center of power in the middle and traffic routes as blood vessels. The city will "define the living conditions of the 3rd millennium", be extremely energy-saving and not use fossil fuels. The project was postponed because "the Chinese would have built everything there".

In 2008 he opened a design studio in Beihai (Guangxi) , south China, where he participated in the development of wind power plants . In 2009 the first Avantis wind energy system was presented, the oval nacelle of which Colani designed.

On May 9, 2014, he opened the Jiangnan Colani Design Institute in Changzhou near Shanghai , in which he contributed ten million euros. Colani saw the institute as a "nucleus" (core) for the development of Chinese industrial design.

In 2018, he worked in China on two types of caravans and an electric car , which he wanted to take over production himself this time.

Ergonomics and aerodynamics

According to Colani, effective and energy-efficient ergonomics must be free of right angles and straight edges. With its curved lines, it reproduces the evolutionary tried and tested organic forms of nature. "Humans have only had technology for 200 years and nature has been solving extremely sophisticated problems for billions of years." An example of this claim is the spherical kitchen "experiment 70" (1970) for the German kitchen furniture manufacturer Poggenpohl , which was presented at the 1970 international furniture fair in Cologne was presented. On a swivel chair, you can reach all equipment and cupboards within easy reach.

Ford Ka Colani, 1998

Many of his smaller consumer goods ( sanitary ceramics for Villeroy & Boch , bathroom fittings for Grohe , televisions, computer mice) were produced in series and have found popularity among enthusiasts. On the other hand, his large projects such as the aerodynamic designs of trucks and a. for Larag, Daimler-Benz AG and series cars were not produced in series for “practical reasons”. The fuel consumption of his models was significantly lower than that of conventionally built vehicles, as it was 30% lower in the case of the trucks than in the series vehicles. After an aerodynamic improvement of the body of several series car types such as BMW 700 (1959), VW Polo (1976), Citroën 2CV (1981), Lada Gorbi (1987), Ford Ka Colani (1998), their speed increased at the same time lower fuel consumption. After the Essen Motor Show in November 1998, the Cologne Ford dealer R&S Mobile had the “aerodynamically optimized” Ford Ka Colani made in a small series of 200 cars.

In an interview on the occasion of his total works exhibition in Karlsruhe in 2004, he explained the resistance of the automotive industry and politics to his energy-efficient, aerodynamic vehicles: “You see, around 25 years ago I developed the first streamlined truck when the first [ [ sic ! ] the second] oil crisis [1979] was on our side. The trucking industry is so nailed up that it doesn't understand and doesn't want this stuff on the road. From the environment of the Federal Minister of Transport, I was told that if all trucks were to consume so much less, then there would be around 16 billion less mineral oil taxes in the state coffers . That was quickly calculated for me with a few button presses. "

Different information circulates about the number of his designs and the products he has realized. The figures in the designs range from 4000 (2018) through 5000 (2008) to 20,000 (2009). Colani emphasized several times that most of the designs he presents to customers are actually produced, namely 70%. A dpa article from 2018 overturned this ratio for the first time, from 70% series productions to 70% rejections, which, willy-nilly, is based on a mix-up. This false claim was escalated in a SpOn obituary, in which SpOn now attributed this claim to Colani himself. In 2008 he said that he was designing more than he was offering customers: "My archives are so full that I could throw things to the entire European industry until 2030." He has therefore been designing on his own initiative and in reserve since then longer time as a "research company". "" We are a research company. We want to be role models. " What he's designing now may be built in 10 or 15 years. "

Professorships

Colani was professor in Tokyo , Japan in 1983 . In 1988 he became an honorary professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen and since 1995 he has been a visiting professor at the Shanghai Tongji University in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Since 2007 he has been visiting professor of transportation design at the elite Tsinghua University in Beijing.

In the 2011/12 winter semester, parallel to the retrospective of his complete works in the Triennale Design Museum in Milan , he set up the Colani BioDesign Research Center in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano . In this think tank, young talents should be familiarized with the basics of biodesign . In 2007 the Politechnico di Milano introduced the master's degree in biodesign .

In 2013 he had “seven or eight” professorships, including one in Moscow.

layout

In an interview on his 80th birthday, he described his process of brainstorming and creating forms. First, there is a practical problem to be solved. With the help of a microscope, he studied plant structures, which he sketched on a block and commented on with comments. This happens in the “very early hours of the morning when the brain is rested.” Colani then modeled the structure he found in plasticine or plaster of paris on a scale of 1:10 and often with a large styrofoam block that he formed with hot wire. His preference for white clothing was therefore practical, not aesthetic. Since he “always works with plaster of paris”, he would always look unkempt with darker clothes.

“Here on one square meter of garden soil you will find the whole world of the highest technology , mechanisms, mechatronics , the finest constructive fiber strands, hollow bodies, panicles , cones , tubers. These are the most intelligent packaging techniques and construction processes! "

- Luigi Colani

Even his father advised him in his youth to look for answers in nature: "I asked questions and nature answered me." Colani was a highly productive creator of new forms until old age ("working like a madman") . He did not see his many activities on several projects at the same time as work, as it gave him "fun" and "great pleasure". At the age of 85, he still had a working day of 14 hours. Colani also recorded his ideas on the go: "I travel around the world twice a month and sometimes use a ballpoint pen refill and an entire writing pad on the flights." He rejected computer-aided design because it would reduce creativity. For each object that he wanted to work on, he first read the specialist literature: “I read tons of paper, I pull everything into my own that needs to interest me in order to stay“ à la page ”[= up to date]. Whether these are tankers or high-speed trains or new missile technologies ... "

Among his greatest admirers were the industrial designers Ross Lovegrove and Karim Rashid , of which he was "very proud". Colani, in turn, adored the futuristic designs of his colleague and film designer Syd Mead , the organic buildings of Antoni Gaudí and Hieronymus Bosch , the great Dutch painter. For him, Bosch was “a super fantasist who showed completely new ways of looking at our environment.” Auguste Rodin was the great role model for Colani in sculpture .

Private life

Luigi Colani had two sons and was married to the Chinese Ya-Zhen Zhao from the mid-1990s. From 2002 Colani had his main residence in the Karlsruhe district of Neureut , because it is close to the Mercedes truck plant in Wörth . Until then, he lived in Shanghai from 1995, then in Beihai , southern China. From 2011 he had another residence in Milan. His son Solon Luigi Colani (* 1972) works as a freelance designer and specialist in special film effects in Berlin. His younger brother Victor Colani lives in Norderstedt near Hamburg and worked for a long time in a leading position in the textile industry. In addition, his brother was a part-time designer. Victor Colani worked in his brother's design factory at Harkotten Castle in the 1970s .

In the 1980s, the chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Airbus AG, Franz Josef Strauss , brokered a consultancy contract with Airbus in Toulouse. In the Toulouse area, Colani temporarily bought Château Haut in Guitalens-L'Albarède from the 17th century, where he stayed on the weekends until he moved to China in 1995.

The Swiss coachbuilder Jürg Bärtschi has been one of Colani's closest friends since the 1980s. Bärtschi and Colani worked together on many vehicles and planes. In autumn 2012 he presented an exhibition on Colani's work, which was opened by Colani. In his spare time, Colani did scuba diving and said that he had spent "a third of my life underwater, in the Pacific".

Colani's grave, court of honor in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe

Colani died in Karlsruhe in 2019 after a serious illness at the age of 91. He was buried on October 5, 2019 in an "eternity grave ", a crypt ( crypt hall 63/64) in the courtyard at the main entrance of the main cemetery in Karlsruhe . The coffin had been designed by himself. The art historian, curator and Colani's friend Albrecht Bangert gave one of the four funeral speeches .

plant

He has been designing cars (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, VW, BMW) since the mid-1950s, and furniture from the mid-1960s. In the 1970s he expanded his field of activity to include other areas, including glasses, binoculars for Bresser , dishes, airplanes, ballpoint pens, televisions for RFT Staßfurt (later produced by TechniSat ), computers and accessories, and much more.

Housewares and more

The “ Colani Egg ”, a mine winding tower in Lünen-Brambauer that was rebuilt in 1995

At the end of the 1960s he worked for the Sauerland contract furniture manufacturer Kusch + Co for around two years and designed a. a. the ergonomic TV-relax couch and a matching armchair. The lounger is an integral part of the permanent exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

In 1972 Colani designed the white, nine-piece tea service Drop for the porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal . The handle of the teapot does not protrude from the pot as usual, as this is created here by a recessed grip, an indentation in the pot. Since the can lid is also sunk flush in the pot, the tea pot takes the form of a drop (drop) . At the same time, the handle, which is located close to the center, makes pouring easier thanks to its better leverage. In 1972 it received the award Die gute Industrieform - iF . This tea set has been included in the permanent collection of the Center Georges-Pompidou in Paris as an example of contemporary design .

From 1972 he designed an ensemble of coordinated sanitary objects for the ceramic manufacturer Villeroy & Boch that made history. "The bathroom was no longer just a place where you took care of your body, but gained the same status as all other living areas and became an expression of individual aesthetics." With the concept of the bathroom "as a fully-fledged living space with its own aesthetic", Colani set the tone for the sanitary industry. The product manager from Villeroy & Boch commented on Colani's designs: “Colani's shapes accommodate ceramic properties. Right angles are almost impossible in sanitary ware, round is what we want. Colani knows the laws of ceramics and knew them before he came to us. "

In 1981 the Zen tea service came on the market. The Melitta group bought Colani's design from 1974 and had the black glazed Ceracron service manufactured in the Friesland porcelain factory . An open teapot is supported on two pillars, the support of which is provided with rubber sleeves. By tilting on the two legs, the tea can be poured from both sides through the handle. The stands are connected to a base plate, which also acts as a warmer with a tea light. These include tea bowls with two small mushroom-shaped handles. This “tea maker” is pictured on the cover of the February 1983 magazine Domus , on which Colani is holding it in his hand.

Canon T90 SLR camera , 1986

One of his most famous and successful designs is the Canon T90 SLR camera (1986), the ergonomically designed shape of which has become the standard on which EOS digital cameras are still based today .

On February 2, 1990, he presented the new uniforms for the approximately 9,000 Swissair employees at the time . The main color of the uniforms was dark blue.

In 1993, Vobis designed a PC with rounded edges and recessed grips . In 1994, the PC was named Computer of the Year by Chip magazine .

In 1995 the Colani egg was realized: the futuristic redesign of a winding tower of the former coal mine Minister Achenbach in Lünen-Brambauer .

In 1997 Colani designed the so-called Pegasus grand piano and a Pegasus piano for the Schimmel piano manufacturer. The round shape is typical of a Colani, here in an oval and curved shape. Thanks to a transparent stand made of acrylic glass, the wing gives the impression of a natural wing, hence the name after Pegasus , the winged horse from Greek mythology. An automatic lift opens the wing cover. The pianist's direct physical contact with the instrument was important for him: “In my design, I put the player into the device with a ring that runs around the device. When he pounds his Rachmaninov into it, he can feel the music in all parts of his body. ”The Pegasus grand piano was bought by Lenny Kravitz and Prince , among others .

Presentation of Colani's new police uniforms for Hamburg, 2005

In 2002 it caused a sensation when he accepted the order of the Interior Senator Ronald Schill , who had gotten into negative headlines, to redesign the uniforms of the Hamburg police . Since August 2005, the police officers in the Hanseatic city have been fully equipped with uniforms based on Colani's designs. The new blue police uniform was adopted by all North German state police forces and became the style for almost all other German state police forces. “Policemen serve humanity and hold out their bones every day - they deserve a decent outfit. I was happy to put an end to this misery with the uniforms. Everyone involved agreed that things have to be blue, that's simply more stylish than green-beige. ”He worked for this project free of charge. The Hamburg fashion manufacturer Tom Tailor made subsequent changes to “quite a few” details, including the now octagonal shape of the hats so that they look like the hats of the New York police officers .

Bottles designed by him have been used by Gaensefurther and Carolinen - mineral water since 2004 ; this company also uses a promotional truck in Colani design.

In 2004 he designed a mini house with 36 m², which the prefabricated house manufacturer Hanse Haus built on its model house park in Oberleichtersbach . The cooperation with Colani was quick, friendly and uncomplicated. The rotating house contains a rotating cylinder made of three parts in one corner of the room. There is a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. 15,000 “rotor houses” are to be built for scientists in Colani's ideal anthropomorphic city, Eco-City (formerly Bio-City) in China.

In 2007 and 2012 Colani designed wallpaper collections for the Marburger Tapetenfabrik , which are inspired by the waves and reflections of the water. The wallpapers were produced with a new hot stamping printing technique, which makes it possible to print fine engravings, so-called hashes , as haptically detectable reliefs. In reference to these collections, he designed a large drop-shaped sculpture for the sculpture path in Kirchhain : La Goutte (= the drop).

vehicles

In 1957, the Austro-Italian sports car maker Carlo Abarth commissioned Colani to improve the aerodynamics of his GT sports car, the Alfa-Abarth 1000 . Colani put the body of an Alfa-Abarth 1000 on the floor pan of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider , the tapered front was inspired by Pininfarina , and the double bubble roof was taken over from Abarth. Instead of aluminum, the body material of the new car was fiberglass-reinforced plastic (GRP), and the air flow control at the rear and below the car was very sophisticated for that time ("quite unusually sophisticated"). These changes enabled the sports car to increase its top speed from 190–200 km / h to 230 km / h (143 mph). In 1957, the new Abarth Alfa Romeo 1300 Berlinetta was the first GT sports car to lap the Nürburgring's Nordschleife in less than ten minutes.

From 1964 to 1968 Colani had so-called kit cars built by the Berlin company Canadur under the brand name Colani , which he initially offered as a kit. As with the Abarth-Alfa Romeo 1300 Berlinetta , an individual plastic body was mounted on the chassis, here from a VW Beetle 1200 . In addition to a coupé version, the two-seater was also offered as a roadster . “With this concept, Colani anticipated the principle of fun cars, which the auto industry would only take up decades later.” In Colani’s opinion, the future of automobile construction lies only in light models: “For me, the fat sedan would have had its day. I'd rather go for the four-way L-car: slow, quiet, fun, easy ... "As early as 1970, he advocated a mini car with an electric motor:" It's just brain-burned nonsense for people who drive Quarter square meters of space are needed to build cars six by two meters. "

In 1972 he rebuilt a March 721 from the German Formula 1 team Eifelland of the Mayen caravan manufacturer Günther Hennerici aerodynamically for free. The racing driver was Rolf Stommelen . The Eifelland-March E21 with its “UFO look” was considered very elegant, but it was unsuitable because the cooling did not work properly. Of necessity, the cladding was gradually restored to its original state. What was striking about the vehicle was, among other things, the equipment with only one centrally positioned rearview mirror.

Also in 1972 Colani offered his help to the financially troubled motorcycle manufacturer Münch and designed a Super-Münch with an aerodynamic fairing and a handlebar that could be placed in a boulevard and racing position. The machine did not go into production due to the bankruptcy that could no longer be averted.

1976: He designed an aerodynamic “Turbo Polo ” for VW , and in the following year he presented a rounded, small version of the Polo .

In 1977 visitors to the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main marveled at Luigi Colani's futuristic cab design of a Mercedes truck.

In 1979 he designed the Sea-Ranger, a multifunctional amphibious vehicle, for Thyssen . The only prototype was built on the basis of a Unimog at Thyssen Umformtechnik in Bielefeld and was presented at the Hanover Fair in 1980 . Due to a lack of demand, the project was not pursued any further. At the IVA Hamburg he showed studies on the magnetic rail vehicle HM-1 (= Hamburg - Munich 1 hour) for Thyssen .

Colani bike prototype from 1982

In 1981 he built a streamlined body on the chassis and engine of a Citroën 2CV ("duck"). It achieved an average consumption of 1.7 l per 100 km and achieved the world record for low fuel consumption at the time.

For the bicycle manufacturer Schauff in Remagen, Colani designed the prototype of a women's bicycle in 1982 with a streamlined cover for handlebars, frame and rear wheel. In addition to the streamlined shape with the headlights incorporated into the handlebar trim, practical details such as a glove compartment and a child seat integrated into the rear wheel trim were provided. The bicycle should have indicators on the left and right of the handlebars, although they were not permitted at the time and are currently (as of 2019) only permitted if a panel covers hand signals (Section 67 Paragraphs 3 and 4 StVZO). The saddle was anatomically redesigned, but in Jan Schauff's opinion "probably more beautiful to look at than to use." The Colani bicycle was not mass-produced because around half a million D-Marks would have been invested in the molds to manufacture the fairings and the bicycles, which at that time generally cost 150 to 200 D-Marks, would have become around 80 D-Marks more expensive.

Egli MRD 1 -Colani in the
Hockenheimring Motorsport Museum

Based on the Egli MRD 1 , a turbo motorcycle by the Swiss Fritz Egli, the fully faired Egli-Colani was developed in 1986 for record drives. The driver's back and front wheel were also covered. With a 300 PS (221 kW) strong Kawasaki engine bored to 1425 cm³, a speed record of 10 km (with standing start) of 272.414 km / h was achieved on December 7, 1986 on the Pista di Nardò , but without the full fairing, which is sensitive to cross winds.

In 1989 the “ Ferrari Testa d'Oro ” achieved the world record for cars in its class with 351 km / h thanks to its streamlined design, which has still not been surpassed.

In 1989 he presented and tested 13 spectacularly shaped, streamlined land vehicles on the Salt Flat in Utah, with which he was able to set several fuel-saving and high-speed records. Under the motto Automorrow   , he tested prototypes for two and four-seaters as well as single-seat tricycles (e.g. Utah 1 ) and two-wheelers (Utah 2) .

Planes

In 1968 Colani developed the propeller airplane study C-309 for the concept propeller record airplane. Two counter-rotating push-and-pull propeller pairs, driven by two rotary engines , were to serve as a new idea for the " Reno National Championship Air Races " held annually in the US state of Nevada . The model was the Dornier 335 , one of the most revolutionary piston engine airplanes of the Second World War . The arrangement of the tail engine reduced drag , making it faster than a comparable normal twin-engine aircraft.

In 1976 he designed the entire cockpit of a small motorized airplane called the Fanliner , which is built on a glider fuselage . This aircraft , built by the Mönchengladbach-based company Rhein-Flugzeugbau , has two seats in a semi-recumbent position and was his private aircraft. Colani also called it the “Porsche of the Skies”. It was sold to China in the 2000s.

In aircraft studies for the various areas of application, Colani tried to find the perfect aerodynamic shape. Some of his designs are heavily inspired by the shape of nature. His study of a mega passenger aircraft for a total of 4,000 passengers on four main decks is largely modeled on the shape of the ancient megalodon in order to achieve the best possible aerodynamics. In 1977 Colani presented this design to the aircraft manufacturer Boeing . However, the project was not implemented.

1978 designed Colani for NASA a large cargo spacecraft for 1,000 passengers. Starting from Kuznetsov - engines should over 15,000 this machine shaft comparative PS per engine feature. For passenger transport, 1000 passengers were distributed over eight levels; as a large freight transporter, this version would be equipped with a huge cargo hold .

In 1982 Colani designed a Mach -2 whiz kid (VTOL). The special feature here was a swivel mechanism for the gas jet emerging to the rear, which gave the machine exceptional maneuverability, as the jet could not only be moved to the left or right, but also up and down by folding the tail.

In 1983 Colani developed a passenger aircraft designed by NASA with the project name “Mach 5”. Equipped with four curved wings and a lance- shaped bow, the passenger aircraft should complete the Tokyo - London route in three hours.

1985: Presentation of the “Pontresina” propeller plane. This machine has two motors that were supposed to drive two pusher propellers. The propellers, also known under the name “ centripetal - supersonic propeller”, were also a new design idea. This aircraft remained a study and therefore the model is not airworthy.

In 1985 a study of a large transporter named "Dolphin Inspiration" was made, which, as the name suggests, was modeled on the round and flowing shapes of marine animals, especially dolphins.

In 1987 the "Bizz-Jet" was developed for a well-known US company. The special feature of this model was the forward- swept wing shape and the extremely fine perforations over the last third of the fuselage, it should reduce the turbulence of the normally existing air inlets.

In 1989 he designed the piggyback concept aircraft “Mach 3 Carrier” for Japanese space research . The starting point for this study was the concept of a carrier system developed by the German space professor Eugen Sänger . The singer principle named after him is based on a carrier aircraft that only has the task of bringing a second aircraft into the high atmosphere so that the smaller aircraft loaded with the payload can make the jump into space. Colani perfected the two machines aerodynamically, the large carrier aircraft for the deeper layers of air and with an open upper deck, in which the shuttle hugs aerodynamically. The shuttle is designed for thin layers of air and space.

Another Mach study was supposed to achieve Mach 24 in level flight despite the apparently misshapen shape of the aircraft . By “piercing” the thick layers of air with a long pipe and briefly burning a huge plasma flame , threads of air were supposed to be placed around the barrel-shaped device, allowing the aircraft to fly as if in a vacuum. This would correspond to the current of the penguins in the water, which was recorded by underwater vehicles.

1996: Design of a fighter aircraft : The elevated position of the cockpit should give the pilot an improved all-round view in order to orientate himself more quickly in enemy territory. This study remained Colani's only foray into the arms and armaments field, as he wanted nothing to do with arms production. (“Are there things that are taboo for you?” Colani: “But what a taboo: I was left at Thyssen because I didn't want to work on tanks and submarines. That's a very clear line. Everything else we've already done it. ”) An alleged“ hunting rifle ”is merely a target shooting rifle .

In the same year he developed the “Pusher-Puller” study. On this record-breaking aircraft, which was supposed to have two counter-rotative propellers at the bow and stern, Colani oversized the propellers and designed them curved to save energy.

In 2001 he developed a new idea for a "flying wing" large-capacity aircraft . The biplane and flying wing in one should have a wingspan of 2 × 80 meters (picture :). This second study for Air China would have been a response to the new Airbus 380 . “Flyingwing” with a span of 160 meters would have three times the stowage volume with the same number of passengers on the A380. “The construction of flying wings is particularly difficult because of the complexity of the flow conditions.” In 2008 Colani planned to build a non-flightable wooden model on a 1: 1 scale at Tongji University in Shanghai in order to make the dimensions tangible.

Exhibitions and fairs

AGOS luxury computer series, Opus Magnum, Design by Colani, 2014

From May 1, 2004 to the end of September 2005, his exhibition "Colani - The Complete Works" was presented in the Nancy Hall in Karlsruhe . The Colani Museum Futurama has been planned in Europe since 2004 .

The Goethe-Institut presented it as part of the Germany-in-Japan Year 2005 with a comprehensive exhibition. In 2005, together with BASF , he presented the “Colani - Back in Japan” show in Kyoto , Japan .

At Cebit 2007 Colani presented a technical innovation: Anyfix , the world's first universal mobile phone charger . Five different adapters arranged in a circle can be selected by pressing the central red button. The universal device did not go into production for reasons that were previously unknown. Colani mentioned in an interview in 2007 that the manufacturer spoke of a pre-order of eight million pieces because many companies wanted the device as a promotional gift for their customers.

From March 3rd to June 17th 2007 the Colani exhibition Translating Nature took place in the Design Museum London . One focus was Colani's sketches of marine life and films that combined life in the aquarium with Colani's biomorphic designs.

In 2009 the first model of the AGOS luxury computer series Opus Magnum, designed by Colani, was presented at the Nowa future fair in Marburg an der Lahn.

At the turn of 2011/2012 the three-month exhibition Colani Biodesign Codex Show took place at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan .

2013 was on the IFA from the mail order company Pearl of the prototype of the 3D printer FreeSculpt Colani presented, which was developed in collaboration with Colani.

Colani Museum Karlsruhe

Colani design
Colani's warehouse and design workshop in the Karlsruhe district of Neureut since 2002.

From May 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005, the large exhibition COLANI - Das Lebenswerk took place in the Karlsruhe Congress Center (Nancy Hall ) . The most important works by designer Luigi Colani from five decades were shown over an area of 4000 square meters. The halls built in the 1960s as part of the Federal Horticultural Show showed over 1000 large objects, models and draft drawings from different years of creation. In 2004 alone, more than 60,000 people visited the exhibition in Karlsruhe. From September to the end of December 2007 the exhibition was opened again.

After the exhibition closed in September 2005, an initiative was founded in Karlsruhe with the aim of presenting Luigi Colani's life's work permanently in a Colani museum in Karlsruhe. At the designer's request, the exhibits should continue to be shown in the appropriate Nancy Hall. Another goal of the association was the professional redesign of the exhibition rooms in the Nancy Hall.

Due to the high renovation costs for the Nancy Hall , the Colani Museum Sponsorship Association was looking for sponsors from industry and trade who were willing to contribute to the costs of maintaining the exhibition hall. The sponsoring association is still active in its endeavors to find and finance a suitable exhibition opportunity for the objects in Karlsruhe.

At the end of December 2007 the exhibition was finally closed and cleared, but the hall was preserved.

In the 2006/07 winter semester, Klaus-Peter Goebel from the interior design department at the Stuttgart University of Technology set the students the task of developing ideas for the design of a Colani museum in the Nancy Hall in Karlsruhe. On March 13, 2007, Volker Albus, Vice-Rector of the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Karlsruhe, presented these designs to the public at the HfG.

Appreciations

The New York Museum of Modern Art added its 1984 Sony MDR-A60 foldable lightweight headphones to its permanent collection.

In 1993 the Center Pompidou in Paris acquired design objects from Colani for the permanent design exhibition.

In the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (Die Neue Sammlung, Staatliches Museum für angewandte Kunst), the jury was impressed by the installation of the permanent design collection: “With the help of light walls, moving paternosters and modular room structures”, the up to 22 m high rooms could be exhibited made; for this, Colani, Zaha Hadid (seat sculptures) and others received the if Silver Award from iF design of the German Design Council .

On March 1, 2005, he was awarded the “Belle Mustache” club in Leinfelden-Echterdingen on the grounds that “Colani is the world champion of the elegant curve” . Colani “have redesigned many areas of life through innovative design and revolutionary concepts. His distinctive beard has become his trademark, ”said the Beard Bearer Club.

The German Post honored the artist by issuing a postage stamp worth 70 euro cents for a standard letter in the series Design from Germany on 8 December 2016. The design of the stamp comes from the Bremer graphic Sibylle and Fritz Haase. The motif depicts Colani's loop chair from 1968, the shape of which is inspired by biomorphic structures. The plastic chair called Poly-COR was manufactured by COR- Sitz Comfort and connects Eero Saarinen's one-legged plastic chair with a tulip base with a cantilever chair . “The most complicated chair currently made. A daring loop made using polyester injection technology, ”Colani said at the time. This loop chair is also the swivel seat in his ball kitchen for Poggenpohl .

Quotes

“Spurred on by the spirit of the student revolt, Colani, who likes to see himself in the footsteps of the Art Nouveau Gesamtkunstwerk ideas, not only wanted to improve products but also to change society. In his treatise "Ylem" in 1971 he described a brave new world in which people - similar to the television series " Raumpatrouille Orion " - live under the seas in "subaquatic settlements" or in "mushroom houses" floating far above the earth which are connected to an elliptical central space by spherical secondary cells with kitchen, bathroom, dining and sanitary units. With the biomorphic forms of his dwellings, he refers to the uterus and the cave, in which he sees perfect metaphors for protection and security. "The soft, edgeless space of the ellipse, " he writes, "exudes a nest warmth in its horizonless harmony, which will make living in angular, earlier rooms appear to be an unreasonable torment."

- Luigi Colani in: Ylem , 1971, quoted from Christian Schröder.

“As long as the mouth heroes in management positions claim that they want progress , but in reality do nothing other than manage the estate and carry a giant bubble in front of them, the future of Germany will remain a giant balloon. These conformists build the cars of the 2nd millennium and have not yet understood that we are already in the middle of the 3rd millennium. "

- Luigi Colani, 2004.

“ You are worried about the German“ Bauhaus ”. What happened? ”
“ Yes, right. There is one more thing that I will address: the Bauhaus, our beloved Bauhaus. I'll tell you why. My father was a film architect and a big architecture fanatic. Before his death he took something from me: “Listen to what happened after the war, that was the real destruction of the Bauhaus.” Look, I'll draw it for you - the square, the triangle and the circle - or in the third dimension - cube, pyramid, sphere - Kandinsky, Wassily , Gropius - luminous colors. It was all there until '33. Then everything was smashed. That was too cosmopolitan for the Nazis . They were way too loose for the Nazis. After the war, however, only the square, the angular design was propagated and followed at the Bauhaus. But there is no excuse for this, for this derailment. From 1945 they did Nazi design at the Bauhaus. "

- Luigi Colani in: Deutsches Architektenblatt , 2014.

“Take a stone and throw it into the water, the stone is round, the trajectory is round, the circles in the water are round, our world is round and moves in harmony on round paths with billions of other, round celestial bodies. Even in species-preserving eroticism, round shapes excite us. Why should I, a thinking person, imitate those who see our world as angular? I continue the fight of Galileo Galilei , my world is round too. "

- Luigi Colani, (without the year).
