The Dongdaemun History & Culture Park is a park around the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in the Jongno district of Seoul not far from the Dongdaemun city gate .

history

Since the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty, there has been a fortress as part of the Seoul city wall Hanyangdoseong and the Hadomateo military training camp .

This part of the fortress wall was torn down by the Japanese colonial power in 1925, instead the multi-purpose stadium Gyeongseong was built, which was opened in 1926 to celebrate the wedding of the Japanese crown prince and was the venue for the most important sporting events during the colonial era.

A quarter of a million people gathered in the stadium on August 16, 1945 to celebrate the liberation from colonial rule. The stadium was renamed Seoul Stadium and later Dongdaemun Stadium and was the largest baseball stadium in Korea. After the construction of the Jamsil Stadium in 1980, it took on the role of a venue for important sporting events. The Dongdaemun Stadium was demolished in 2007 and excavations of the old fortress wall began.

The Dongdaemun History & Culture Park opened on October 27, 2009. During the construction, the Igansumun Water Gate (a lock from the Joseon Dynasty) and the Chiseong (the oldest preserved defensive position in Seoul) were excavated, along with a number of other historical finds . The originally intended name Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park was therefore changed to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park.

The construction of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza , designed by Zaha Hadid and Samoo Architects & Engineers , then began and was inaugurated on March 21, 2014.
