Gerhard Matzig (born May 22, 1963 in Deggendorf ) is a German journalist, graduate engineer and non-fiction author. He was best known for his work as an editor and architecture critic for the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Life

Matzig completed a degree in law, political science and architecture in Bochum , Passau and Munich . He graduated as a graduate engineer. After a traineeship and various activities as a freelance journalist, he became editor in the features section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 1997 , responsible in particular for everything related to urban development and architectural criticism. After Matzig headed the "Weekend" department of the SZ for some time, he switched back to the feature section in 2013.

What is characteristic of the cultural journalist Matzig is his ability to look beyond the boundaries of specialist areas and national peculiarities. He understands architecture and technology as well as zeitgeist and urban sociology. For example, he describes the emerging ecology boom in architecture, design and fashion in the USA and Europe in the second half of the first decade of the 21st century under the heading of “green glamor”. In a world in which most “experts” rarely look beyond their very limited area of expertise, he integrates and broadens the view and thereby proves to be a stylist. In 2013 Matzig received the literature award from the Association of German Architects and Engineers' Associations .

“The fact that age-appropriate attributions as natural bio-spheres in an unbounded all-age society, in which children grow up earlier and later and adults get old later and later, are apparently up for grabs, explains the phenomenon of young neocons apart from economic contexts . Neocons are consequently - on the one hand - the answer to uncertain circumstances and a neo-Biedermeier style of society that can be found everywhere aesthetically, if not spiritual and cultural; on the other hand, it owes its existence to those adults and old people who are not both: grown up or sane.
