The Canon EOS digital cameras ( EOS-D series, Electro-Optical System Digital ) are a series of digital single-lens reflex and mirrorless system cameras from the Japanese manufacturer Canon in the Canon EOS digital camera system . In addition to the cameras, the range includes matching interchangeable lenses, flash units and other system accessories.

General

The EOS digital cameras continue the EOS model series of EOS 35mm cameras . The first digital Canon EOS was presented in 2000, and as early as 1995 Canon had been selling Kodak digital SLR cameras under its own name based on Canon 35mm SLR cameras. In the digital EOS cameras, CMOS image sensors are used in two different sizes: 35mm format sensor (“ full format sensor ”) and the smaller APS-C format. The middle APS-H format is no longer used in the current models.

Canon lenses with an EF connection or suitable lenses from other manufacturers can be used on all digital EOS single-lens reflex cameras . The EOS models with sensors in APS-C format from the EOS 300D onwards have a new lens connection to which the newly developed EF-S bayonet lenses also fit. To control the camera functions and for image processing DIGIC - image processors used.

Using the model names, it is possible to classify the cameras according to quality and area of application. The number of places in front of the “D” in the type designation shows the class of the camera: the shorter the number, the higher up the camera is in the range. The digit model numbers are, however, in this case re-used in new models, which terms such as EOS-1D X emerge.

With the EOS M , Canon introduced an interchangeable lens camera without a mirror, a so-called mirrorless system camera , for the first time . The EOS M has an APS-C sensor. With the EOS M, a new lens mount was also introduced, the Canon EF-M bayonet . Canon EF and EF-S lenses can be connected to cameras with an EF-M connector using an adapter. The first camera with an EF-M connection, the Canon EOS M, is based on the Canon EOS 650D and is largely identical to it in terms of functionality.

With the EOS R , a new bayonet for mirrorless system cameras in 35mm format was introduced in October 2018. Lenses with EF and EF-S bayonets can be connected to the EOS R using a lens adapter . This does not apply to lenses with EF-M bayonet.

Prior to the introduction of the EOS D30 , Canon was co-selling digital SLR cameras built by Kodak using Canon SLR camera bodies. All of these cameras were based on a modified EOS-1N so that EF lenses could be used. The image sensor and electronics were from Kodak.

The Kodak EOS DCS5 was the first camera in this series in 1994 and thus also the first DSLR with a Canon EF bayonet, but Canon did not take it on for sale. The "Kodak Digital Science SCS 1000 Camera" from 1997 was also only sold by Kodak (but not publicly sold). The EOS DCS 3 and EOS DCS 1 are almost identical to the Canon EOS-1N and only differ in the attached digital back. The Canon EOS D6000 (identical to the Kodak Professional DCS 560 ) was only available in Japan, the Canon EOS D2000 (identical to the Kodak Professional DCS 520 ) was initially only available in Japan, but later also worldwide. Both models were created through a further modification of the EOS-1N.
