The Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R are digital SLR cameras of the EOS model series from the Japanese manufacturer Canon . They were launched in June 2015.
technical features
In the cameras a 50.6-megapixel comes CMOS - full-frame sensor is used. Series of pictures are possible at a speed of five images per second. Videos are recorded in 1080p resolution at 24 ( ATSC ), 25 ( PAL ) or 30 (ATSC) frames per second. The resolutions 720p and VGA are also available.
The exposure index of the sensor is ISO 100 to 6,400 in the standard settings and can be expanded to ISO 50 to ISO 12,800.
The cameras also have the following technical features:
- 61 point measuring fields / 41 cross sensors
- 8.11 cm LC display (3.2 ") in 3: 2 format with a resolution of 720 × 480 pixels
- Use of CompactFlash cards type I (UDMA-7 compatible) as well as SD , SDHC or SDXC memory cards in two independent slots
- Viewfinder with 100% field of view
- HDR mode
- Two DIGIC -6 image processors
A radio transmission of pictures with the optional wireless file transmitter ( wireless file transmitter ) WFT-E7 possible by the manufacturer. By limiting the video to a maximum length of 29 minutes and 59 seconds, taxation of the devices as video cameras is avoided.
GPS connection
The manufacturer offers the GP-E2 GPS receiver as an accessory . With these cameras, it can be used either via the hot shoe or directly with the cameras via the USB connection. The GEO coordinates determined by the GPS receiver are saved in the Exif data of the photos and videos ( geo-imaging ). The electronic compass built into the GPS receiver determines the viewing direction, which is also saved in the Exif data of the photos.
Model variant 5DS R
The 5DS R camera model differs from the 5DS model variant in that the latter effectively does not have an analog low-pass filter installed in front of the sensor. This enables the model to have a higher resolution when using a suitable, non-limiting lens; in borderline cases this is accompanied by possible moiré effects that would otherwise be prevented by the low pass.
Implementation of the model
When photographing fine patterns that have almost the same grid as that of the sensor pixels, moiré artifacts arise . An analog low-pass filter is necessary to prevent this . At the same time, it reduces the effective resolution, since particularly fine contrasts are "smeared". The concept of the 5DS R model envisaged doing without the low-pass filter in favor of a higher resolution and accepting the formation of moiré. However, a direct removal of the component would have changed the length of the optical path, which in turn would have led to complex design changes. To prevent this, a different implementation approach was chosen.
Along the optical path length within the camera, the light passes through various filters on its way to the image sensor, in particular one horizontal and one vertical scatter filter. These split the light from one pixel to neighboring pixels and thus implement the analog low-pass filter .
In the 5DS R model , the horizontal scatter filter has been replaced by a vertical inverse filter (called “low-pass cancellation filter” in publications), which directly reverses the effect of the vertical scatter filter and thus compensates for the effect of the first filter. Due to the two filters, the optical path length is identical to that of the 5DS model ; related design changes are avoided.
