The Canon EOS 300D (marketed as: Digital Rebel in the USA, Digital Kiss in Japan ) is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Canon , which was available from autumn 2003. Their production stopped in 2005.

The camera must not be confused with the similarly named Canon EOS 300 model from the same manufacturer, which is a single-lens reflex camera for 35mm film produced between 1999 and 2002 .

technical features

The camera has a 6,3- megapixel - CMOS sensor in an APS-C format, the size of 22.7 mm × 15.1 mm. The dimensions of the camera housing are 142 mm × 99 mm × 73 mm (W × H × D). The weight without battery and storage medium ( CompactFlash ) is around 560 grams. Due to its design, the camera is suitable for using the manufacturer's standard accessories from the EOS series. The camera is compatible with more than fifty standard lenses and has a format factor of 1.6.

Images are created with a maximum resolution of 3072 × 2048 pixels . In JPEG format , the images are saved with a color depth of 24 bits, in raw data format (RAW) with a color depth of 36 bits. A medium-quality JPEG file is integrated into each RAW file and can be extracted using an associated program. It is not possible to save RAW and JPEG images in two files at the same time.

The camera can be set to ISO values 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600.

In addition to the exposure modes programmed automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure, there are predefined programs such as fully automatic, portrait , landscape, close-up ( macro ), sports and night scene.

The camera offers an exposure time of 1/4000 second to 30 seconds. There is also a long exposure function ( bulb ). The camera was also sold as a package with a manufacturer's EF-S 18–55mm f / 3.5–5.6 lens.

There are two liquid crystal display panels on the back of the camera body . The upper field is used to display the image counter and various recording parameters. Below is a color display with a size of 1.8 ″ and a resolution of 115,000 pixels. A preview of the motif via the rear display ( live view ) is not possible; the image section is determined using the optical viewfinder , while the display can be used to check the recordings. The sharpness can be checked using a software-based magnifying glass function .

A built-in position sensor detects how the camera is being held: This means that pictures taken in portrait format can be automatically rotated correctly during further processing using suitable software .

reception

The EOS 300D was the first digital SLR camera that went on sale for less than 1000 euros and was therefore located in the consumer sector. As an “entry-level” DSLR, it opened up a completely new market segment and was a great sales success for Canon. The technical performance features were excellent for the time, as the same image sensor was built into the camera as in the recently released mid-range model EOS 10D. Compared to the compact digital cameras widespread at the time, the EOS 300D offered a multitude of possibilities for creative image composition. The bayonet connection was also compatible with the lenses of the analog cameras of the EOS series, so that owners of such cameras could continue to use them.

The camera received mostly positive reviews in the trade press. Criticism was made of the cheap-looking plastic housing and the comparatively small and dark viewfinder image. It was also criticized that the camera lacked some functions of the professional models (e.g. no direct option to select the exposure metering method and the autofocus mode, no flash exposure correction , no mirror lock-up , low burst speed). The image quality, however, was generally not criticized. Some functions can be activated by loading manipulated firmware.

The alleged lack of support from the Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems was often criticized . In fact, the camera is not recognized with the standard settings via USB . This can be remedied by changing the connection settings from "Normal" to " PTP " in camera menu 2 .

Tampered firmware

The technology of the EOS 300D was very similar to the larger and more expensive model EOS 10D . In order to clearly differentiate the two models from one another, the manufacturer deactivated a number of functions in the firmware of the EOS 300D. However, hacked (i.e. unauthorized) firmware was soon circulating on the Internet that was manipulated in such a way that additional functions were now available in the camera:

  • Ability to lock the shutter release button if the memory card is not inserted
  • Manual control of the autofocus function types (switching to single AF or continuous AF is possible)
  • 3200 ISO is available and displayed as H iso
  • Flash control
  • Individual functions such as B. Mirror lock-up (mirror lock) are activated
  • Continuous picture function is expanded
  • File size of the JPEG file embedded in the RAW file with parallel storage becomes controllable

Guarantee and warranty claims are void if the unauthorized firmware is installed.
