Flash exposure compensation

Under a flash exposure ( English flash exposure compensation , FEC ) are understood in the photograph intention to over- or under-dosing of the flash of a camera using the flash control. It influences the brightness of the object reproduction in the flash range , but not the brightness of the ambient light; this must be changed by means of an exposure correction on the camera, for example by changing the f-number or exposure time .

Thanks to TTL measurement, modern flash units are able to determine the required amount of flash light via the camera and to dose it automatically. A deviation from the suggested value, which the flash exposure measurement showed , is then referred to as flash exposure correction and is specified in the unit of measurement EV ( exposure value , light value ) as a +/- deviation.

Flash exposure correction may be necessary for very dark or very bright, image-dominant areas as well as for objects that are in the immediate vicinity of the flash source.
