Picture Transfer Protocol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Picture Transfer Protocol ( PTP ) is a protocol developed by the International Imaging Industry Association for the exchange of images between digital cameras and other devices such as computers or printers.

functionality

The advantage of the protocol over other solutions is that no additional device drivers are required: every PTP-capable device runs on every PTP-capable device without any additional effort.

The procedure was published as ISO 15740 in 2nd edition on April 15, 2011. It was originally only intended for USB connections, but has also been expanded to include wireless connections ( PTP / IP , Picture Transfer Protocol over Internet Protocol ). Not every camera manufacturer fully adheres to this standard. It is possible that some cameras support PTP, but not all functions are available.

Although it is not yet an established standard, the protocol is already supported by many cameras and operating systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows from ME, Mac OS X , Linux and other Unix derivatives ). Even some portable music players (such as various models from Cowon ) can address cameras via PTP. B. is possible to create space on the storage medium of the camera by moving the photos to the music player.

In autumn 2004 Microsoft and Canon presented a further development, the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP).
