MediaMonkey is a proprietary audio player for Windows and Android . The Windows version is available in a free free version and a paid gold version.

Functions

MediaMonkey can manage music collections, read audio CDs , burn CDs and create playlists. These lists can either be played with the internal player or with Winamp . Also plug-ins for Winamp are mostly compatible with Media Monkey. The ability of the program to be emphasized is that a lot of freely selectable additional information can be created for a piece of music and one can search for it comfortably.

MediaMonkey can archive more than 100,000 media files and manage as internally SQLite - database is used (before version 3 found an Access database using). All changes to the ID3 tags and cover images can also be written directly to the files on request, so no information is lost if the virtual database is lost.

Missing tags can be queried via amazon.com or via CDDB . If necessary, a cover image can be uploaded via Amazon. MediaMonkey also enables manual and detailed ID3 tag editing. In addition to individual playlists, there is the option of creating various auto-playlists that play pieces with a certain mood or songs of a certain genre.

MediaMonkey supports the following audio formats :

By adding additional input modules, the list of supported formats can be expanded almost at will.

The synchronization with an MP3 player can take place via USB Mass Storage (UMS) as well as via the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). Certain cell phones, such as the Apple iPhone, can also be synchronized with MediaMonkey. An installed version of iTunes is also required for synchronization with Apple devices .

The program can also classify music files based on their tags, analyze their volume and adjust it evenly, compile statistics or perform simple tasks independently with scripts.

Variants and versions

The audio player is available in two versions:

  • The freeware version
  • The fee-based version MediaMonkey Gold , with an extended range of functions.

Some functions are deactivated in the free version (e.g. the sleep mode) or severely restricted (burning audio CDs is only possible at four times the speed, MP3 files can only be created for 30 days). If you replace the file lame_enc.dll in the program directory with the original file from the LAME project, you can get around this restriction. This is even pointed out on the official website.

In the third version of the program, existing functions were improved and the layout revised, but emphasis was placed on maintaining the "MediaMonkey feeling". Now the playing time of the said title is displayed correctly. An overview of the CD covers has been added.
