Monkey's Audio is a lossless audio data compression method . The files created use the filename extension .ape . As a metadata system comes APE tag is used, which has been specially developed for Monkey's Audio.

Although the development is open source , Monkeys's Audio is under its own, restrictive license, which is why it is classified as proprietary software .

properties

The Monkey's audio format has a higher compression rate than other lossless compression methods and is supported as standard by numerous software players or can be integrated as an extension . However, there is a comparatively high computational effort for the decompression . The compressed file contains checksums of the original file created by means of a cyclic redundancy check , with which error detection is possible , but no correction is possible.

Applications

Only one version of Windows is maintained by the original developer . In the meantime, however, there are ports for Linux and implementations in the platform-independent programming language Java . For Mac OS X there are two freeware players, Cog and ToolPlayer , which can play other audio formats in addition to Monkey's Audio . In addition, several freeware converters , for example Max, XLD or xAct, can use this format.
