The Canon EOS 5D Mark II is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Canon , which was launched on the market in November 2008. It is no longer produced. The manufacturer directed them to professional photographers .
technical features
The camera has a 21.1-megapixel full-frame - CMOS - image sensor . The exposure index is in the range of ISO 100–6400 (with special functions also 50–25,600). Motion picture recording with 1080p resolution is possible with 23.976 ( ATSC ), 25 ( PAL ) or 29.97 (ATSC) frames per second. Video sequences of up to 4 GB can be generated while still images can be recorded in full resolution.
The camera also has the following properties:
- Live view mode
- continuous recording of 3.9 frames per second
- 7.62 cm (3.0 ") LCD in 4: 3 format with 640 × 480 pixels (307,200 pixels, as with VGA )
- Exposure index 100–6400 (expandable via special function from 50–12,800 or 25,600)
- self-cleaning sensor unit
- DIGIC-4 image processor
Firmware development
Since the firmware update to version 1.1 (Sep. 2009), manual control of exposure time, aperture and sensitivity is possible in video mode. In October 2009 the manufacturer announced that it would also support the 25p and 24p refresh rates in the future. Corresponding firmware was released in March 2010. In addition, support for manual sound control and an RGB histogram for video recordings with manual exposure was added. The sampling frequency of the sound recordings has been changed from 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz. The frame rates of 24p and 30p have been adjusted to the typical 23.976 and 29.97 frames per second, respectively. The current version is 2.1.2 from February 22, 2012.
After the success of the free firmware extension Canon Hack Development Kit for Canon compact cameras , a third-party firmware extension for the EOS 5D Mark II was developed in 2009 under the name Magic Lantern .
Magic Lantern offers additional functions that are mainly useful for video and film art, but also for photographers, including a "zebra mode" to identify overexposed and underexposed areas, a follow focus , audio level control, deactivation of the automatic gain control of the Microphone input and much more. Some of these functions have since been included in the manufacturer's official firmware.
GPS connection
A GPS device can be connected to the camera via the data transmitter WFT-E4 from the camera manufacturer in order to record the exact location of each photo. The GPS receiver must be able to send NMEA data sets via USB. The coordinates are saved in the Exif data of the image ( geo-imaging ).
Use in television productions
The camera was the first single-lens reflex camera with a full-frame sensor that can record video sequences in full 1080p HDTV resolution. As a result, this device combined the previously separate areas of video production and photography and was therefore also used by filmmakers. The camera is particularly suitable for scenes that have to be recorded in a confined space.
