The Canon EOS 7D is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Canon , which was launched on the market in October 2009. It is aimed at ambitious amateur photographers and professionals. Because of the high speed of continuous shooting, it is particularly suitable for sports and animal photography.

On September 15, 2014, the manufacturer presented the successor EOS 7D Mark II . At five years, the 7D has the longest production period of all previous EOS models.

technical features

The camera allows a series frame rate of 8 frames per second. Videos can be recorded in 1080p resolution at up to around 30 fps or 720p at up to around 60 fps. The autofocus system works with 19  cross sensors . The basic housing of the camera is splash-proof. The EOS 7D is the first camera manufacturer has a radio transmitter for EX Speedlite - flash units . The field of view in the viewfinder offers 100% coverage at 1.0x magnification - the image in the viewfinder therefore corresponds exactly to the recorded image. An electronic spirit level can either be displayed in the viewfinder or on the rear display. In contrast to other models from the manufacturer, the screen can no longer be exchanged, but is designed as a transparent LCD . This makes it possible to change the display in the viewfinder via the menu. There are 63 measuring sectors available for TTl exposure metering. The spot area can be limited to approx. 2.3% of the image field ( spot measurement ).

Features of the camera include:

  • 7.5 cm (3.0 ") LCD with a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels
  • ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800 via special function)
  • Integrated sensor cleaning ( EOS Integrated Cleaning System )
  • Compatible with all EF / EF-S lenses and EX Speedlites flash units (with integrated transmitter)
  • Enhanced Live View AF
  • Two DIGIC -4 processors

ergonomics

The 7D has larger buttons than its predecessor

As the first model in the EOS series, the 7D has larger buttons that can also be operated with gloves. The display has a colorless anti-reflective coating . Another new feature is the ability to start the video and live view functions at the touch of a button. The position of the on / off switch, which can be found on the program selection wheel on the EOS 7D, is also new (previously the switch was positioned on the rear quick selection wheel on EOS models with an LC display on the top).

Firmware update 2012

An extensive firmware update was released in August 2012. The update increases the maximum continuous shooting speed from 7.3 frames per second to 8 frames / s. Automatic ISO ( exposure index ) can also be limited as a result; possible maximum values are in the value range from ISO 400 to ISO 6400. The audio level for film recordings can be set manually. In addition to some editing options for images in raw data format, a GPS module can also be operated on the camera.

Video

During the video recording there is the option to set the aperture and frame rate manually. The camera does not have a continuous autofocus during filming. The film sequences are limited to twelve minutes at 1080p and 720p or 24 minutes at 640 × 480 or 4 GB file size. The 7D offers the possibility to record the sound from an external microphone, which e.g. B. is attached to the accessory shoe. A jack socket serves as the interface .

The camera supports important frame rates natively, i. H. the NTSC- and PAL-based 60 fps / 50fps and their full-screen versions with 30 or 25 fps. In addition, the camera supports the typical film refresh rate of 24 fps in 1080p. Videos are saved as AVC / H.264 encoded MOV files.

Individual evidence

  1. Canon (among other manufacturers) counts the subpixels of each pixel, i.e. H. the red, green and blue channels of each pixel individually, and therefore specifies the rear display with 307,200 [pixels] × 3 [colors] = 921,600 or approx. 920,000 pixels.
