The Wireless File Transmitter (WFT) is an accessory part of digital SLR cameras from Canon , with which the image data from selected cameras from this company can be transmitted directly to various destinations. The image transmission is carried out via radio (e.g. WLAN ) or wired.

Cameras

Currently (as of March 2017) there are 8 different models of the WFT, which are suitable for the cameras shown here:

  • WFT-E1: 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II
  • WFT-E2: 1D Mark IV, 1D Mark III (via firmware update), 1Ds Mark III (via firmware update)
  • WFT-E3: 40D, 50D
  • WFT-E4: 5D Mark II
  • WFT-E5: 7D
  • WFT-E6: 1D X, 1D X Mark II
  • WFT-E7: 5D Mark III
  • WFT-E8: 1D X Mark II

application

The WFT is screwed from below to the camera on the tripod thread; Depending on the model, either a multi-pin plug in the WFT engages in a suitable socket in the bottom of the camera or a cable connection on the side establishes the data connection. There is no provision for increasing the battery capacity as is the case with the company's battery handles. The WFT requires its own battery for power supply. This is partly the same model as it is in the camera. In the models WFT-E3 to WFT-E5, the technology is integrated in a full-fledged portrait release. A GPS navigation device can also be connected via USB , the position data of which is embedded directly in the respective image once the connection has been made. The WFT depends on a NMEA compatible receiver with a real USB interface.

Data transfer

Five types of transmission in two groups are built into the WFT:

  • Via LAN - either by cable or via W-LAN
    • FTP : The WFT accesses an FTP server and plays the picture you have just photographed in a preset directory.
    • PTP: direct transfer of the images to Canon's own software
    • HTTP : display the images in a web browser
  • via USB
    • copy the images from the memory card to an external hard drive
      • collected as a backup
      • directly
      • selective: e.g. B. the raw data on the hard drive, the JPEG images on the memory card of the camera
    • Receipt of position data from an external GPS receiver, which is written directly into the respective image.

business

The WFT does not have a separate switch, but is activated with the camera. As soon as the WFT is recognized by the camera, new menu functions are available within the camera. With the new functions, the WFT is set up on the one hand, and also addressed and controlled on the other. The settings of the WFT are retained after switching off, but the camera expects the same configuration on the WFT after the power supply returns (see data transfer ).
