The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is a mirrorless system camera from the Japanese manufacturer Canon . It was launched on the European market in September 2019. A special feature of the mid-range camera is the lack of a viewfinder; an external electronic viewfinder can be attached (EVF-DC1 or EVF-DC2).

The camera continues both the M5 and the also viewfinderless M6. The camera competed with cameras from other manufacturers such as the Sony a6400 , Fuji X-T30, and Nikon Z50 when it was launched .

technical features

The EOS M6 uses an APS-C format image sensor with a resolution of 32.5 megapixels. The camera can record videos with a resolution of 4k at 29.97 or 25 frames per second or with full HD resolution at 119.88 frames per second. The M6 can take up to 14 frames per second. A so-called burst mode enables the recording of up to 30 images per second in raw format.

The camera weighs almost 400 grams and has a screen that can be folded up. A built-in viewfinder is missing. The 3.0 inch display processes around 1.04 million subpixels.

The Canon M6 Mark II has a connection for microphones (3.5 mm), there is no headphone connection. The camera can be connected to or charged to a computer via a USB-C port (2.0). The housing is covered with a rubber coating in a grained leather look.

Assessments

Dpreview said the camera was engaging and a joy to take photos. It can keep up well with the competition, even though it is not the best in class in many categories. The review found the "really solid photographic companion" to be positive about the recording quality in low light and the wide dynamic range. The direct operability and ergonomics were also well received. The rolling shutter phenomenon is very limited.

The Canon does not come close to the autofocus of the Sony a6400. The details of the video quality in 4K are much worse than those of the competition, and there is no flat log or log profile. The battery life is disappointing.

Techradar also praised the compactness of the small camera. Nevertheless, she doesn't make any compromises when it comes to functions and quality. The sensor is much better than the previous model. The focus is impressively fast. It is particularly suitable for travel. The lack of a built-in viewfinder and the fact that the screen can only be turned up were criticized. A built-in image stabilizer is missing; Techradar points out, like others, that the EOS-M system has only a few of its own lenses and the use of heavier EF lenses via an adapter allows the camera to tilt forward. Overall, however, one is surprised that the small camera has proven to be so powerful.

Among other things, Cameralabs focuses in particular on the missing viewfinder. Such a viewfinder is better built in, although it would make the camera bigger, heavier and more expensive. By doing without, there was also space for another rotary wheel. The existing external viewfinder, EVF-DC2, does not have a particularly high resolution. Since the external viewfinder uses the hot shoe, you have a problem as soon as you get there e.g. B. want to put on a microphone or you want to turn the screen up for a selfie. In addition, there is the rather high price for the viewfinder.
