EF-M bayonet
The EF-M bayonet refers to the lens bayonet connection that Canon uses to connect lenses and mirrorless system cameras with APS-C image format. It was introduced in October 2012 with the EOS M camera .
Due to the omission of the mirror box and the reduction to the APS-C format, the lens moves closer to the sensor than a single-lens reflex camera. It has a flange focal length of 18 mm, compared to 44 mm for the classic EF bayonet . This enables the construction of flatter camera bodies and a more compact lens construction. The diameter of the EF-M bayonet is about 7.5 mm smaller than that of the EF bayonet.
The electronic interfaces of the EF and EF-M bayonets connected to the bayonet are compatible. It is therefore possible to use EF and EF-S lenses on EF-M cameras using an adapter. The automatic functions of a lens, including any image stabilization, are supported. Conversely, EF-M lenses cannot be used on conventional Canon SLR cameras with EF or EF-S bayonets because they are too short.
It is incompatible with the Canon RF bayonet introduced in 2018 , as the flange focal length of the RF bayonet is 2 mm longer and the RF bayonet has a 7.5 mm larger diameter.
Adapter for third-party lens connections
The reduced back focus allows the use of numerous third-party lenses that are designed for a longer back focus. So from alternative providers z. B. Adapters for the universal M42 screw thread , Leica M , Leica R , Minolta SR , Pentax K , Nikon F , Canon FD and many other systems available. Since the camera can usually not control the lenses, the lenses must be set manually (aperture, focus). Only a timing automatic (without open aperture measurement ) is often possible.
Tilt-and-shift adapters are available for some systems (e.g. Nikon F ). Since the adjustment mechanism of the adapter requires space, 35mm single-lens reflex lenses are more suitable. The lenses of many rangefinder cameras offer less leeway with their slightly shorter flange focal length. A 24mm tilt-and-shift lens with an EF-M connector is available from Samyang .

Adaptation of EF and EF-S lenses and their limitations
In principle, it is possible to connect all EF and EF-S lenses to a camera with an EF-M bayonet using an adapter from Canon. The full range of functions should be retained (e.g. iris control and autofocus still possible). On the Canon UK homepage, however, it is pointed out that the autofocus does not work with several older lenses on the M3 and M10. It is not mentioned whether this also applies to older M models.
